Thomas M. “Birdman” Whalen, age 59, of Erie, passed away Thursday, August 31, 2017 at the Cleveland Clinic. Born in Erie on January 31, 1958, he was a son of the late Francis and Genevieve (Colvin) Whalen.
He was a teacher in the Erie School District for 28½ years, retiring in 2014. He was a long-time basketball coach for the school district coaching at Academy, Woodrow Wilson, & Strong Vincent. While coaching, one of his Academy teams made it to the PA Western Finals. He loved working around his house and taking care of his plants. He made sure that he kept his grass looking like Fenway Park.
Tom received his nickname “Birdman” through his love of golf. He had two hole-in-ones. His first one was at the upper course at The Peek n’ Peak. His most recent was at Crab Apple Golf course on August 12, 2013, hole 15, 152 yards, using a 9 iron. He worked part time at many golf courses.
Tom held many titles throughout his life from soup nazi to the best stain remover ever. He enjoyed having his home full of friends every Sunday during football season. Tom was an avid Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Penguins Fan. He had many wonderful friends from the Sports Page. Tom loved life and was the first one to help a person in need. Most of all he loved his family and being a wonderful father to his daughter, Julie. He also loved his dogs, Sparky & Sidney.
Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Melissa A. “Missy” (Minadeo) Whalen; a daughter, Julie Ann Whalen, of Pittsburgh, and a step-daughter, Victoria Ann Dandrea, of Erie; siblings, Sr. Patricia Whalen, R.S.M., of Erie, Terry Whalen (Cynthia), of Cleveland, OH; Mary Whitney (Bob), and Michael Whalen, Erie, Jane Ann Connelly (Dan), Oil City, PA, Ennis Whalen and Bridget Whalen, both of Erie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th Street at Greengarden Boulevard, Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m., at which time there will be a brief service.
