Barbara Jean FARRELL Alward
=Husband Gerald's obit=
Gerald Evans Alward, 57, of 1600 Skyline Drive, died Friday, June 2, 1995, at Hamot Medical Center.
Mr. Alward was a son of Harold B. Alward and the late Eleanor Warthman Alward. A 1956 graduate of Strong Vincent High School, he attended Gannon College and worked for Special Metals Co. in Dunkirk, N.Y., for 20 years, retiring in 1988. Previously he worked for Erie Insurance Exchange and Security Peoples Bank. Mr. Alward, a quality control specialist, spoke at many seminars and worked with author Dr. Edward Deming, considered the father of the quality movement. He was a member of the Erie Excellence Council division of the Erie Area Chamber of Commerce. He served in the U.S. Navy on a submarine in the Mediterranean. He was a member of St. George Roman Catholic Church, where he was involved in the bereavement ministry and was a Eucharistic minister. He also was a Eucharistic minister at Saint Vincent Health Center, and also was an associate of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, fourth degree, and served on the board of directors of Stairways.
In addition to his father, survivors include his wife of 38 years, Barbara Farrell Alward; three sons, James G. Alward of Florence, Ky., Gerald E. Alward II and John H. Alward, both of Erie; two brothers, Samuel A. Alward of Washington, D.C., Edwin L. Alward of New Fairfield, Conn.; and four grandchildren.
Friends called at Burton Funeral Home, 4740 Peach St., and attended a service there followed by the funeral Mass at St. George Roman Catholic Church, 5145 Peach St. Burial was at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
