Dear classmates: Half a century; Golden Anniversary, 50 years. No matter how you say it or write it, it's a long time. A lifetime to some. Fifty years ago, as we entered the adult world, most of us were unaware of what the fates had in store for us...single or married ...our career paths...where we would live. Each of us moved forward and embraced the challenges of life. We ended up scattered all over the world, in a hundred different places, with a hundred different vocations. Each of us has experienced highs/lows ...successes/ failures...good times and bad. We survived and prospered. Now in the twilight of our lives, we can enjoy the fruits of our labor. No matter where we go, though, we will always have that bond of brotherhood as classmates, forever.
Often as I listen to those Golden Oldies on the radio, or watch a doo-wop Special on PBS, I close my eyes and my mind travels back to those wonderful days of our youth. Remember...the Peninsula, and beach outings, crusin' State Street, the Home Drive-In with their burgers, FFs, shakes and chicken-in-the-basket ...the school dances, sock hops, and the Shy Club. The Pep rallies, ball games, swim meets, and wrestling matches at school. Going on dates to the Warner, Strand, or Sheas theatres downtown; the drive-in movies (Skyway and Star); pizza, bowling, skating, Waldameer, hayrides, and a hundred other things.
It was a wonderful time to grow up, and in an ideal city. We made friendships that lasted a lifetime. Some of those friends are gone now, but they'll always be with us.
Now, as each of us draws closer to that ultimate fate of all humans, I'm reminded of something my father once told me long ago..."Son, when your turn comes, and you stand before St Peter, and he asks why you should be allowed to enter those Pearly Gates, you can say "Sir, I did my best, and I made the world a better place while I was there. He'll say "Welcome, go in, my son."
In the not-too-distant future, the last of the SVHS class of 1958 will stand in front of St Peter and be asked that same question. They will answer "Sir, we might not have been the smartest, the richest, or the most famous, but we did our best and made the world a better place for having been there. He'll answer by saying "Welcome."
