Paul Smith

First of all, thank you to everyone who helped pull this together.

In the summer before college, l worked on a survey crew that laid out the alignment for Six Mile Cypress Parkway. Will Hayek and I were both on the crew and we had to work hard cutting line through woods and swamp. I severely injured my knee very close to the present site of Hammond Stadium. That was the end of the job for me.

At USF, I studied horn and worked at various jobs including Bern's Steak House. I soon got that "rude awakening" that Mr. Kirk had repeatedly said was coming my way. I found out I wasn't as good as I thought I was at playing the horn. I changed majors and left school after my junior year.

I spent a few months in my home town of Sarnia Canada before returning to Ft. Myers. I alternated between waiting tables and working construction for a couple of years. I helped open "The Shallows" on Winkler Road (remember that place?). I returned to surveying and found that I very much enjoyed that work. My work included laying out portions of I-75 in '78-79 and later Pelican Bay in Naples as well as many other developments east of 41. My best memory was when our crew was conducting a topo of a creek near Bonita Springs and it was my job to row upstream in a canoe loaded with our survey equipment (the rest of the crew had to hike to the creek). It was a beautiful winter day and I couldn't believe I was getting paid for doing something that was so enjoyable.

During this period I ran into Kellie Thayer who had played horn next to me in band at MHS. We dated for a couple of years and were married in 1981. We built a house in the Cape and began to think about raising a family.

Later that year I was hired by William Hammond as Lee County's first Bicycle Coordinator. It was a great job for me as it combined my passion for bicycling with my cicil engineering experience. My job morphed into a position where I responsible for reviewing all proposed developments.

In 1984 I applied for a job with the Minnesota DOT and we flew to St. Paul for my interview to check out the Twin Cities.. I didn't get the job but we fell in love with the Twin Cities and made plans to sell our house and move up North...way up north!.

Anticipating our move, I took a consulting job with Charlitte County that helped finance our move. It was from our office in Punta Gorda that I witnessed the Challenger disaster. A few months later our first son Michael was born, a very big baby with a healthy set of lungs! What a joy!

In 1986, we loaded up a rental truck, said goodbye to our folks and drove up to Minneapolis. We soon found a nice home in a suburb of St. Paul.

After I working as a surveyor for a couple of private outfits, I took a job with the City of Minneapolis. I was hired as an
Engineering Technician in Public Works then advanced to an Inspector. In 2001, I transferred to Regulatory Services where I was a Zoning Inspector until March of 2023 when I retired from the City of Minneapolis.

Our second son, Bryan was born in 1988. Kellie and I separated in 89 and divorced in 92. Kellie remarried and (against my wishes) moved to Missouri with Michael and Bryan. I visited them as much as finances allowed had some visits with them at home in Minneapolis.

In 1994, I decided to make a little extra money, by working for the Park Board as a hockey referee. I enjoyed the experience and son began to officiate lacrosse games as well. I had played club lacrosse at USF in Tampa. Lacrosse was just taking off in the mid 90s and expanded quickly to high schools and colleges.

In 1997, I met Donna while at work (more to come)

(more to come later)
