Today's Featured Biography
Michael Oliver
After graduating from FMHS 1960, I attended the University of South Florida, majoring in Fine Art until drafted into the Army in 1964. I was discharged in 1967 and returned to Ft. Myers briefly and then moved to Miami where I worked as an art director and then creative director for several ad agency’s. In 1970, I married and my wife and I moved to Atlanta in 1972 to take a position in graphic design studio.
During that time I developed a good relationship with the advertising department at Coca-Cola USA as eventually opened my own studio with them as my first client.
Looking to try something different led me to open my first retail store, a Charles Jourdan shoe store franchise, in Lenox Square in Atlanta in early 1977 and I soon closed my design studio to come back to Miami and opened another Charles Jourdan store in Coconut Grove. My wife and I divorced in 1980 and I sold both stores a few years later and opened a new design studio in Coral Gables. I was able to get FPL as a client, a relationship which lasted almost 20 years, as well doing design work for banks, real estate companies and ad agency’s.
Manal Moussa and I married in 1993 and we have a house in Miami Beach and a daughter, Lucy Liu, that we adopted in China in 2007 when she was 9 months old. Manal worked for my CPA and we met when she came to audit my businesses. Manal now has her on accounting firm and a bookkeeping company. We also opened a lingerie store in Ft Lauderdale, which we sold in 2002 and I decided to semi retired. I have gotten my pilots license and tried to learn Chinese since then. Last year we spent 5 weeks in Shanghai, our third trip to China, where I attended Chinese language school and Lucy went to Chinese kindergarten. Both of us love to travel, and have spent the past few years traveling to Bali, Singapore, Thailand, Kuala Lumpur and Japan. This year we are planning a trip to India and then back to Shanghai for more classes.
