Today's Featured Biography

Susan Meier

I joined the Air Force in March 1982, went to basic training in San Antonio, TX. From there I went to Biloxi, MS for training in Wideband Communications Maintenance (microwave radio and related equipment). I was there from May 1982, to December 1982. My first assignment was in England, about 65 miles North of London. I saw a lot of wonderful places in London and Edinburgh, Scotland and visited some area castles. I fell in love with the U.K. in general and Scotland in particular due to the beauty of the land, the history of the countries and the friendliness of the people. From there I went to Sumter, SC. I was in a Tactical Unit. Didn't have much fun there - due to the squadron - not the town. Then I went to the Philippines in May 1985 - not long after Marcos had been removed. Fascinating country full of contradictions but wonderful people. I was at a small beachside base 140 miles N.E. of Clark A.F.B. From there I went to a very small site in Scotland - 8 miles from the nearest town of Fraserburgh. I got to indulge my love of Scotland by driving all over the country and visiting Edinburgh several times. Loch Ness is incredibly beautiful but unfortunately the monster was absent that day. I spent 2 years there and then went to Tinker A.F.B in Oklahoma City. I was assigned to the 31st Combat Communications Squadron where I was deployed to Oman in mid-September 1990. Yes, it was just as bad as it seemed. I came home February 4, 1991, for my grandmother's funeral and separated from the service in April of that year. I came back home to Metro Denver. I worked for a commercial property management company for 8 years as an administrative assistant as I had had enough of electronics for a while. I helped manage what is commonly known as the Xcel Building on 17th Street and 2 buildings for UCD. I met a lot of interesting people working for them. I then worked for a company called Alpine Access - it's an at-home call center - that means 99% of the people work from home. I worked on the helpdesk helping agents with computer problems over the phone. I loved working here though it can be a challenge to help people that aren't comfortable with their computers. I have a great boss and wonderful co-workers. I currently own a townhome in Lakewood that I am trying to renovate - that's a hard job. I have no pets. I decided not to marry or have children. Unfortunately, while deployed to Desert Shield/Storm I became one of over 35,000 military personnel that came home sick. We called it Gulf War Syndrome. I'm in constant pain and can no longer walk very far. I'm trying my best to live a decent life and not lose hope. I am happy.

Alumni Can Still Help South
  • The Giving Grocery Resource at South. The giving grocery is a wonderful place for students to get food for their families and also necessities for daily life. SHAFI contributes money each year to help out. Sadly the food pantry is losing their primary source of funding, so even the smallest of donations can make a big difference. 200 students currently receive weekly items that their families critically need.

If you want to know more, AND/OR to donate to help, details can be found here.

  • Have you linked your King Soopers Loyalty card to Denver South? If you do so, 5% of your purchases come back to Denver South! SUPER EASY and you don't need to spend an extra dime. https://www.denversouthptsa.com/ksloyalty
