John Mills, 67, of Marshalltown, died late Monday night, July 16, at the Iowa River Hospice House.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 20, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest with full military honors conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Harry C. Harter Post #839 and American Legion Frank Lewis Glick Post #46 of Marshalltown. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Memorials may be directed to his family. Born on February 3, 1945, in Marshalltown, he was the son of Howard and Gladys (Lounsberry) Mills. He graduated from the Marshalltown High School’s Class of 1964. John served our country honorably in the United States Army during the Viet Nam War.
On February 17, 1968, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, he was united in marriage to Amelia “Amy” Karl. They made their home in Marshalltown where he was employed for 42 faithful years at Fisher Controls until retiring in July of 2007. He was a member of the UAW Local #893, Central Iowa Outdoors Without Boundaries, and the American Legion. John treasured his grandchildren and enjoyed hunting, fishing, anything outdoors, NASCAR (Jeff Gordon was a favorite), gardening and flowers.
Left to cherish his memory are Amy, his loving wife of 44 years, his three children: Julie (Rev. John) Rutz of Hastings, Iowa, Jeffery (Stephanie) Mills of Hastings, MN, and Carolyn “Carrie” Mills (fiancé Brian Wilson) of Marshalltown, five precious grandchildren: Molly, Jacob, Jeremy, Riley and Andrew, his half-brother Ollie (Katheryn) Reno of Marshalltown and half-sister Bessie (Will) Stoelk of Wilton, Iowa.
In death, he rejoined his parents and half-brother, Vance Reno.
