Today's Featured Biography
Karen Franks Welsh
I've been married to my high school sweetheart, Brian (KHS-1977), for more than 27 years.
My husband, known as Kahu in the islands, is the pastor of Haili Congregational Church in Hilo. It's the oldest Kalawina church in East Hawaii and the starting point of a great revival in the Pacific Rim during the early 1800s. Our church is very Hawaiian and it is a joy to serve here!
Together we've been blessed with three beautiful and tall children who are all very akamai! Our eldest, Bethany, is a junior at the University of Hawai'i, Hilo Campus. Carys is a freshman at UHH, and our youngest, A.J., is a sophomore at Hilo High School and was blessed to be on a winning varsity volleyball team for two years in a row!
We are happy to announce Bethany's engagement to a wonderful man. She's tying the knot on July 21st. We're all very excited!
Besides being the wife of a pastor and a mother, I am also an award-winning journalist. I've won 13 major awards in the past five years, including a recent Pa'i Award given by the Hawaiian Publisher's Association. Currently, I write a popular weekly column for the Hawaii Tribune-Herald and I freelance for Free Surf Magazine and I'm a food critic for gayot.com.
On top of that, I'm a contributing editor of The Carolina Journal(100,000+ circulation), an arm of the John Locke Foundation in Raleigh, North Carolina and I write on-call for a local ad agency.
Of course, I give Mrs. Flo Hayslip, my expository writing teacher at Kailua High school, the credit for molding and honing the giftedness that God so graciously has bestowed upon me.
As if my writing career wasn't busy enough, I recently took the job as the Parent Community Networking Center Facilitator at Hilo High School. The job is part time and flexible, which is perfect for me. It involves a lot of public relations and communication. It's right up my alley!
I am also the very remiss class administrator for this website. If you have any questions or concerns you may address them to me. Otherwise, everyone from KHS --'78 should sign up on this site. I would appreciate hearing from any classmates that remember my husband and me.
Also, I'd love to reconnect with Cathy Nelson (1979). I've missed you all these years, but have never been able to locate you!!
Aloha to everyone!! Write soon!!
