Today's Featured Biography
Bruce Schubert
For the record, I'm the Software Development Director for a small company (AeroComputers) in Oxnard, CA that makes Moving Map systems for police helicopters and fire fighting. They get a pretty good workout here in So Cal with all the fires and police chases. I get to hang out and/or fly with likes of the FBI, CHP, LAPD, NYPD, etc. I've been to France and Portugal as a speaker at the International Aerial FireFighting conference.
I'm happily (re)married.
I raised a son (Bryce) who's a Staff Sergeant in Air Force and he has just returned home (safely) from deployment Iraq. He's home on leave and he is moving on to Robbins Air Base in Georgia after being stationed in Germany (my birthplace) for the last three years.
I'm an avid motorcycle enthusiast (both road and off-road) and last year I completed a 16 day 7,000 mile solo bike trip from Ventura to the Arctic Circle and back. For the motorcycle guys, here's the list: 1999 BMW LT, 2005 BMW GS, 1998 Honda XR400, 1986 Honda CR500.
Here's a quick synopsis of what I've been up to for the last 30 years:
- As some of you may remember, I was working for the Bremerton Sun in high school. I worked for the newspaper corporation for 17 years. I was the IT director for a conglomerate of newspapers. That job took me to Ventura, CA in 1990.
- Meanwhile, shortly after high school I became a volunteer FireFighter for the South Kitsap FD. I was a Battalion Chief for the Gorst and Bremerton Airport stations. I did that for eight years until a 'paid' station eliminated the need for volunteers.
- After leaving the newspaper business in 1993, I took a job as a software developer for the Ventura County Fire Department. Although I was a staff employee, my firefighting and outdoors experience ultimately got me into the county's helicopters to map wildland fires. This effort eventually put me into contact with AeroComputers, my current employer.
- In 1999, I was doing contract work for AeroComputers, which became more fun than working for the county, so I left the VCFD in 2000 to work for Aero.
- I'm a pilot, thanks to my current job.
- I was married in my mid-twenties and divorced in my mid-thirties.
- I was a single-dad raising my son in Ventura, CA when I remarried in 1996.
Currently:
- I still like to volunteer my time:
- I'm a sound engineer for my church
- I'm an off-road motorcycle patrol volunteer for CA State Parks (first-aid, directions, find lost riders, etc.)
- In my spare time (when is that?) I'm slowly building a home recording studio in my home office where I play guitar and bass. Basically, I have AAD (Accessory Acquisition Disorder) and the only remedy is a trip to Guitar Center.
- Even though I'm a nerd, I like wrenching on my motorbikes and my 1978 Jeep. Something usually gets bent or breaks when I go wheeling. For the motorheads: 1978 CJ7 with an 86 4.2 ltr and 89 GM fuel injection, lockers, 33s.
- My wife and I have three dogs named Runt-Dog, Ratt-Mutt and Rhombus [that's what I call them]. My wife calls them Cloey, Grady and Rhombus. Those that know me might have guessed that MY dog is named Rhombus (a dachshound) -- I always liked geometry.
Best regards to all!
-- Bruce
