Today's Featured Biography
Philip Fawcett
I have been very blessed, fortunate, and incredibly lucky.
On a personal level we recently moved from a 25-acre farm east of Duvall Washington in the Snoqualmie valley where we lived for 32 years to Gig Harbor Washington. We are celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary this year (2024) and have two wonderful children and two grandchildren.
On a professional level, I am currently (2024) teaching full-time at Pacific Lutheran University (P.L.U) with dual appointments in computer science and business. I also teach on weekends part-time at the University of Washington-Tacoma Campus.
Prior to teaching, I worked 31 years at Microsoft in various roles on engineering teams, engineering management/leadership, executive management, and spent the last half of my corporate career in Microsoft Research. In Microsoft Research I had the role of transferring new research ideas and technologies into shipping Microsoft products. These technologies were developed in Microsoft worldwide research labs in: Redmond, Bangalore, Beijing, Cairo, Cambridge (UK) and other locations in Western Europe and around the world. I also have been a future technology speaker at Microsoft sponsored conferences in and outside the U.S with engagements in Australia, Taiwan, Europe, India, and other worldwide locations.
Before changing careers from Tech to Teaching I earned a PhD in data science/information science from University of Washington - Seattle and an MBA from Seattle University while working at Microsoft. I have had the opportunity to teach outside the U.S. in an entrepreneurial program at Oxford University (U.K.) for the development and funding of future entrepreneurs from the M.E.N.A. region (Middle East-North Africa) and have taught in Russia (via a translator).
Though I have been super busy with career, education, farm, and family, I have taken the time to do short term (1-2 weeks) volunteer development work with organizations like Youth with a Mission/Homes of Hope, World Vision, and FMI (Four Square Missions Intl) at locations in Mexico, Central and South America, and Russia. Some of these volunteer opportunities included my wife and family. These experiences provided a lasting perspective on other cultures, languages, and economic situations outside the United States.
Most students call me 'Dr. Phil' though I am not the 'Dr. Phil' of syndicated television and Oprah fame :) :). My overall focus in teaching is to develop and enable the next generation of computer scientists, data scientists, and entrepreneurs.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
