Today's Featured Biography
Carol Sperry Ochs
I have been married to my high school sweetheart, Bob Ochs, for 50 years. It just gets better. We have two sons, Robert and Aaron, both of whom are married with families of their own. Rob and Heidi reside in Huffman, TX, and have three sons, Lane, Warner, Keller, and one daughter, Channing. Aaron is married to Teresa, and they live in Houston, TX. They have two daughters, A'Marie and Ariana, and one son, Juaquin.
Bob served as an Arabic linguist while in the United States Air Force. We had the opportunity to live in Athens, Greece, where he flew reconaissance missions for three years. Our younger son, Aaron, was born there.
While there, we traveled throughout Greece, Europe and parts of the Mideast. We explored historic sites in Turkey, Italy, Switzerland, Holland, Germany, Austria, France, and Belgium.
Upon Bob's graduation from UMKC, we moved to Norman, OK, where Bob began his 31-year career as an aerospace engineer.
I graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a BS in Education and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction. I taught school in Noble and Norman, OK, for 20 years -- everything from 1st grade to 7,8, and 9th grade alternative school. While teaching in Norman, I took 25-30 students every summer to Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Washington, D.C. to provide them a hands-on American history experience.
I also taught at the University of Oklahoma for 5 years as an adjunct professor teaching pre-service teachers. While there, I also ran the university's reading lab where I was in charge of facilitating teachers' lessons plans for 1st through 8th grade students with reading difficulties.
Through a teacher-exchange program, I was afforded the opportunity to travel to schools in Tokoyo and Odawara, Japan, to observe and interact with educators there.
In addition, I spent two weeks in Bratislava, Slovakia, sharing democratic teaching practices to post-Communist educators.
The following 18 years I served as a national literacy and numeracy consultant training and suppporting pre-K-12 teachers in their implementation of reading and math curricula in schools throughout the United States. My travels took me to schools in Puerto Rico, Alaska, New York, California, Florida, Minnesota, Montana, Wyoming, Oregon, Washington, Mississippi, Louisiana, North Carolina, Georgia, Iowa, Ohio, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Kentucky,South Dakota, Illinois, Arizona, Colorado, and Texas.
While traveling is our favorite past time, we also spend countless hours at ballfields and in gyms across Texas and the US cheering our grands on in competitive volleyball, basketball, and gymnastics. We also love to bike ride, walk in our neighborhood (named the livable forest), landscape our yard, remodel our home, and read.
We are excited about the upcoming 50-year (51 years actually) Truman High School Reunion and have loved reconnecting with former classmates while preparing for it.
If you are ever in Humble, TX, private message us on Facebook. We are about an hour north of Galveston. We would love to hear from you.
