Today's Featured Biography
Deborah McCain Pyszka
I've had a very happy life. After graduating from UCM I began teaching in Blue Springs, earned my master's in reading, became department chair and 1992 teacher-of-the-year. Highlights of my time there were two trips to Europe with groups of students, teaching the children of classmates, teaching the children of former students, having former students return as fellow teachers, and to have former students who returned and taught my children.
A huge part of my personal life has been my happy marriage to Bob (42 years) the birth of my two sons and the opportunity to raise and experience two remarkable young men. We also hosted an exchange student from France named Etienne. He was with us in 94-95, but has returned several times, and our boys have visited his family several times as well. Etienne is an integral part of our family.
One of our greatest adventures was to move to suburban Chicago in 1997. I taught for 12 years in Kildeer school district and escorted eighth graders to Washington, D. C. each year. We took advantage of all the culture in Chicago by attending museums, galleries, zoos, Chicago Symphony, the opera, and dozens of Broadway in Chicago shows. We love to go back to visit as our son Patrick is still there with his beautiful lady, Emily.
When we retired, we returned to KC, but settled in Lee's Summit this time. Both my sisters and my mom were in Lee's Summit. We have been busy renovating our home, helping my mom, closing her house and finally getting her into an Alzheimer's facility. Our entertainment now is travel. Our first year back we took a cruise to South American. Crossing the equator is a day-long celebration, and we were able to climb to the top of Machu Picchu.
Our son Michael married in 2007, and in 2010 was expecting their first child when he suddenly died from a brain tumor. Six weeks later Mike's wife Brie gave birth to beautiful, red-haired Jillian Michael Pyszka. She is the joy of our lives.
My mother-in-law says my car has hot wheels, as we are always going somewhere. Between trips to Chicago and trips to Colorado to see Brie and Jillian, we manage to squeeze in trips to see friends and relatives and the occasional cruise. We are grateful to be happy and healthy.
