Carl Bourne

After graduation I continued to perform with my Rock Band around the KC area. The Fall of 1965 I attended some classes at the CMSU Residence Center. By the Fall of 1966 the Draft Board was breathing down my neck so I joined the US Air Force. The Air Force took me to Texas, Mississippi, Oregon, & Georgia. Luckily I was able to stay out of war zones by qualifying for a classified radar job skill that had assignments mostly within the continental US. During my Air Force enlistment, I spent most of my leisure time traveling and playing music in various Rock Bands. After my discharge from the Air Force in 1970, I returned home to Independence to go back to college and finish my degree. I attended CMSU again and restarted my music career to pay for school and my car. My Rock Band (River Rock) got pretty well known at the time and we traveled around the Midwest playing in just about every club and dance hall that existed. In 1972, after some soul searching, I decided to transfer my college credits to Kansas University to pursue an Engineering degree. I moved to Lawrence at that time and lived there for five years while I worked and went to school. In 1977 I graduated with two degrees from KU (BS Electrical Engineering & BA Social Sciences). My first Engineering job took me to Dallas. After three years I had an opportunity to move to Florida. I have been in Florida for over 28 years now, working in Space and Defense Engineering on NASA projects and on programs for the Defense Industry. I have been in the Tampa Bay area during this time but have worked for five different companies while living virtually in the same small community of Seminole for all 28 years. My wife (married in 1974) Catherine graduated from Shawnee Mission South (1971) and also graduated from KU (1977). While I began my engineering career, she finished her Master’s Degree at Univ. Texas at Arlington during our time in Dallas. When we moved to Florida, she opened a private psychotherapy practice and has been engaged in that work the entire time here. Most of my extended family still live in the KC area.
