Today's Featured Biography
Michael Petrie
After graduation, I left for the Univ. of Nevada Las Vegas. I spent 4 years in Las Vegas. And as the saying goes, "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas". I returned to Indiana and settled in Indianapolis where I completed a Business Degree in Finance at IU. I completed a MBA from IU 4 years later.
I started my business career at Merchants National Bank in 1979. After a year, they created Merchants Mortgage Corp. and I became a mortgage banker, specializing in multi-family real estate finance. After 10 years, I was the EVP in charge of the Commercial Real Estate Division for Merchants National Corp.
Not satisfied with the corporate rat race, I and the President of Merchants Mortgage Corp. started a mortgage banking company where we work today. I am currently Chairman and CEO of Merchants Bancorp, and Chairman of Merchants Bank of Indiana, a $ 11 Billion community bank with a subsidiary called Merchants Capital which currently services in excess of $19 Billion in multifamily and healthcare loans.
I have been an active participant in the mortgage banking industry over the years and served as Chairman of the Mortgage Bankers Association, Washington D.C. in 2004-2005.
My avocation is providing housing for lower income individuals. I am Chairman Emeritus of Merchants Affordable Housing Corp, which I have run for 30 years. We own 14 rental projects that have over 2,600 units. We serve all income ranges, but primarily people whose income is between 30% and 60% of median income. My most favorite project was completed in 2014 and contains 20 units for developmentally disabled adults. It is called Merici Village and supportive services are provided by Village of Merici, Inc. Probably the most rewarding thing I have ever done. I also serve on the Board of Directors of the Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership, the Indiana Affordable Housing Coalition, Highland Golf and Country Club and IU's National Varsity Club Board.
I enjoy golfing, running, biking, fishing, fly-fishing, hunting,
reading and watching sports (not in any particular order).
I was fortunate to meet Jody Jones upon my return to Indiana. We married in 1981 and we have two daughters. Emily graduated from IU in 2007 and Julia graduated from Univ. of Dayton in 2009.
