Kevin Blackwell

Kevin Blackwell’s Biographical Sketch


My name is Kevin Blackwell. I’m a full-time instructor at Olympic College. I teach in the Computer Information Systems (CIS) department. I’ve only been a full time teacher for about 1 ½ years. Before I began teaching full-time I worked as the Technical Services Manager in the Information Technology (IT) department of Olympic College where I had been working for about 19 years (full-time and part-time, combined) and taught at Olympic College for about 9 years (part-time) as an adjunct faculty member. My background is in Information Technology, but I also have a background in electronics. I’m a 23 year veteran of the United States Marine Corps, where I worked in the field of aviation electronics (i.e. “Avionics”) and in the field of personnel administration.
Currently I teach classes in the following areas, Information Systems Security, Cisco Networking, TCP/IP, Microsoft LAN Administration, UNIX LAN Administration, Novell LAN Administration, and some of the introductory courses in the CIS department.
I also own and operate a computer consulting company, Microtek. Microtek has been in business, providing network and computer consulting services for residential customers and businesses in Kitsap, Mason, Jefferson, King, and Snohomish counties, for almost 20 years. Operating my own computer consulting company helps me to maintain strong ties with the local community.
Although I’m a native of New York City, where I was born in the Bronx, I’ve spent most of my life in Bremerton (where Olympic College is located). I am a 1980 graduate of Central Kitsap High School. I am also a 1990 graduate of Olympic College where I received my Associates of Science (A.S.) degree. I spent the first half of my life preparing for a career in the “profession of arms” (i.e. United States Marine Corps). I spent the latter half of my life developing my career in the field of “information technology.”
Before resigning my position as the Technical Services Manager for IT at Olympic College, I returned to school to earn my Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in Information Technology from AIU, where I graduate “summa cum laude”. My primary purpose for returning to school was so that I could teach full-time and pursue a terminal degree (i.e. Ph.D.). My life-long goal is the attainment of my Ph.D. As a student of distance learning I always make sure that all of my classes have some online component (i.e. “hybrid” or “online”).
