The Past 50 Years....
I did not finish high school with most of you because I really didn't like school, except for friends. My goal in life back then was to be a mother and have a happy home with children. Because my parents were always so happy, I thought my life would be the same. My marriage to John Hughes, who was my high school sweetheart, ended in divorce after fourteen and a half years. We had three sons, John Jr., Charlie, and Arite.
In 1972, our son Charlie was electrocuted. John and I had been divorced about a year at that time. During the time my marriage was on the rocks I spent a year praying for answers. I heard the Lord speak to me and say, "Marilynn, I have something better planned for you." It was that still small voice, and when He speaks you know it is Him.
John and I have remained friends, and our two sons work with their dad doing utility construction, most of their jobs are here in Austin. I have three grand-daughters, and two grand-sons, and now I'm a Great-Grandmother.
In 1977 I had a blind date with Kert Goode and it was love at first sight for both of us, and within three months we married, and the following year we had Sarah. Some might remember I was pregnant at our class reunion in 1978. Kert and I have been married now for 31 years, and God has truly blessed us. He had three sons and now seven grandchildren. All our children and their spouses are good friends. Truly God has given me something "BETTER" and I give "HIM" the PRAISE.
In 1999, Kert and I moved from Denton to Bertram which was his hometown. At that time we had two mothers that needed our attention and Kert was elected Mayor in 2000. He served till his mother died in 2003 and we had houses to restore. Our houses are done, so two years ago I ran for council to continue what Kert started and was elected Mayor Pro-tem. This year I am running for Mayor with Kert's help.
For those who knew me from 1st grade on, will remember a very shy, more reserved and quiet person. In 1990 Kert and I took a trip to the Holy Lands, and I put a prayer request in a crack at the Wailing Wall. It was that God would allow me to stand up and speak before a crowd of people. That was answered so I can do what I do today.
After my parents died, my family and I made a decision to hold onto the home I grew up in on Travis Heights Blvd. My father, his brothers, and their father owned a construction company that played a major role in Austin's growth from 1940 to 1989, and with that information I will be getting a special historical designation for my family home. Many of you will remember the fun times we had at this home, the football games on "The Hill" or swimming in the pool, or the Valentine's party in the sixth grade when my mother fell and broke her nose, and everyone had to go to Terry Bray's house and wait for their parents to pick them up there.
For many of our classmates the party is over, for those left behind, let's enjoy these days together and remember "The Good Times and our many blessings".
In September 1954, The American Statesman started a column called "Tri-High Scoop". A student from each high school wrote about the happenings at their school and then it was published in the Sunday paper. Each school had a "catchy" name, Austin was Maroon Musings, McCallum was 'Callum Clues and Travis was Travis Drawl. Enjoy reading about the days when you were at Travis.
Travis Drawl By Jill Harvey February 3, 1957
Starting off with a brand new semester and a clean slate, the Rebels attended their first classes Monday morning.
Getting off to a good start also was Alma Jo Vesperman, senior student, who placed first in the city in a historical essay contest. Her prize was a $100 scholarship for her essay on the waterways of Austin.
Turning from waterways to sportswise, we find 37 boys going out for this year's baseball team. Returning lettermen for the team are two-year lettermen, Johnny Brown, Terry Jackson and Charles Stapp, and Gary Ross, Don Richard, James Irby, Danny Cater and Sam Ruiz.
Mrs. Jean McReynolds is teaching a new course at Travis this semester. Economics was taught once before by Bill Kitchens. Some 28 senior students are enrolled in this college preparatory course.
The A Cappella Choir, under the direction of Miss Josie Champion, is larger this second semester. The group is working on several religious songs, but tryouts will soon be held for leading parts in their spring operetta.
