In September 1954, The American Statesman started a column called "Tri-High Scoop". A student from each high school wrote about the happenings at their school and then it was published in the Sunday paper. Each school had a "catchy" name, Austin was Maroon Musings, McCallum was 'Callum Clues and Travis was Travis Drawl. Enjoy reading about the days when you were at Travis.
Travis Drawl By Joy Toungate March 22, 1959
March is the month for passing out honors! Week before last, R-Club members were announced. Last week members of the National Honor Society, Quill and Scroll, and the Spanish National Honor Society were revealed.
Quill and Scroll is a national organization for students of journalism who have 100 inches of copy or 100 hours of work, and a high scholastic average to their credit. Only juniors or seniors are eligible.
Two-year members of Quill and Scroll are: Norma Alexander, Kay Colvin, Judy Fuhrman, Carlene Kanetzky and Marie Liardon.
New senior members are: Dorothy Martin, Diana Nichols, and Linda North.
Juniors making Quill and Scroll are: Jere Cyrus, Chester Eitze, John Irvine, Vonnie Israel, Joanne Mallett, Marilyn Preusse, Joy Toungate, Wilma Wages, and Ann Windsor.
Quill and Scroll emblems will be awarded at the annual publications banquet April 24. Next year's publication staff will be announced at the banquet.
New to Travis is the Spanish National Honor Society. Travis is the only Austin high school which has this organization. Spanish Honor Society officers are: Irene Gutierrez, president; Pam Smith, vice-president; and Hortense Guerra, secretary-treasurer.
The other members of the Spanish National Honor Society are: Connie Bargas, Rose Dombi, Martha Gaskin, Susie Guerra, Flora Gutierrez, Laura Holley, Vonnie Israel, Elida Patino, Mary Rocha, and Connie Todd. Mrs. Margaret Adey is sponsor of the society.
National Honor Society members will be published next week.
Two groups of people from Turkey visited Travis two days week before last. The visitors said they were impressed by the quietness and orderliness in the halls and classrooms, the friendliness of the students, the freedom allowed students, and the modern building and equipment.
The Travis choirs sang "Song of Democracy" March 13 for the Tenth District Meeting of the Texas State Teachers Association. Members of the a cappella, boys', and girls' choirs combined and with the musical cooperation of members of the band presented the program in the new municipal auditorium.
Saturday Travis' band hosted the bands entering the Interscholastic League Band Contest here in Austin.
Thirteen Future Nurses from Travis journeyed to Galveston over the weekend to the State Future Nurses and Allied Health Careers Convention. All last week, members of the Travis club prepared campaign ribbons and nurses' caps for the campaign of Austin's candidate for State president of the convention, Connie Zeissal, McCallumite. The Austin nurses' clubs also campaigned to have the state convention in Austin next year.
As a part of the current careers program, Mr. J. Lloyd Wood, employment supervisor, spoke to an assembly of seniors Thursday morning. He spoke about the vocational opportunities in the field of public utilities.
The top three scorers in the Tenth Annual High School Mathematics Test taken by 48 Travis algebra students, were Larry Ray Walker, Frank Ray, and Edward Ischy. The next seven runners up were Bennett Averyt, Raymond Mosteller, John Lovelady, Bobby Clark, Nancy Sappington, Tommy Proffitt, and Bobbie Ann Darter.
