From the 1958 Rebel Roundup:
"Let each man do his best."
In September 1954, The American Statesman started a column called "Tri-High Scoop". A student from each high school wrote about the happenings at their school and then it was published in the Sunday paper. Each school had a "catchy" name, Austin was Maroon Musings, McCallum was 'Callum Clues and Travis was Travis Drawl. Enjoy reading about the days when you were at Travis.
Travis Drawl By Carol Cotman May 4, 1958
Spring rolls around in Rebelland and banquets come with it. The Rebel Band had its annual banquet Monday night at El Matt, and the publications department holds the honor of the latest banquet of the week. The banquet, held Thursday night at the Tower, was presided over by Jackie Smith, co-editor of the Rebel Roundup, and Everly Driscoll, editor of the Southerner.
Fred Blum and Nancy Dawson, Dixieland seniors, were honored Wednesday by a luncheon at the Greek House by the University Kiwanis Club. This club has been honoring a boy and girl from each high school at its regular monthly meeting.
The PASF'ers of Travis brought home honors after attending the 15th annual convention April 26 at the Austin Hotel. Narcissa Gutierrez won third place in the Pan American Day Posters, and Beatrice Calderon danced her way to second place in the modern dance contest. In the folk dance division, Judy Griffin, Suzanne Guerra, LaBron Parker, and Mary Hipolito placed second. Alex Ledesma was awarded second division in clay modeling, and Jackie Smith placed second in the poetry writing contest.
Rebelland salutes Mr. Joe Tyson with a Rebel yell. Mr. Tyson was recently awarded the title of outstanding high school teacher in the Austin Public Schools for 1958. This award is given annually by the Lemuel Scarbrough Foundation.
Pat Morgan, Travis senior, won second place in the annual Miss Y-Teen Contest held by all of the Y-Teens Club in Austin. Pat represented the senior club at Travis, Adda Dabba Padda.
The Parent-Teachers Association had a chance to view the latest Rebel styles at the April meeting. Mrs. Irene Falk's clothing class modeled new spring styles for parents and teachers. Alice Mosteller and Melinda Milstead were commentators. An art show was also exhibited with drawings by students in Mrs. M. R. Davis' art classes. Mrs. Carmen Ferris' food class served refreshments for the group.
Prospective Aggies? Maybe so -- Bob Chandler, Larry Hibler, and Charles Shaw enjoyed a tour of Aggieland last Saturday conducted by ex-Rebel and Aggie senior, Tom Cotman.
