Jami Hemmer

After highschool, I pursued a BS degree in math. In Oct. 1999, I gave birth to my son, Dominic. I finally graduated from UNL in Dec. 2000. I worked in the fine jewelry industry in management through college until May 2003, when I moved to Dallas, TX. I, very successfully, sold cars for about 5 months before becoming an account manager for a Chinese Importing company. I bought my first home in January 2005. I worked for the importing co. for about a year and a half. I worked my last day with this company on Friday, 7/15/2005. I was to start a new job as a pharmaceutical sales rep the following week. However, on Sunday, 7/17/05, (just a few weeks after my sister, Jill, finished her last chemo treatment) I just left my home to pick up my son from spending the night with a friend and was in a horrible car crash. I was broad-sided on my driver's door by a red-light runner going about 65mph and left no skid marks. It left me in a coma and on life support for about 10 days. I suffered many broken bones, punctured/ruptured organs and a severe TBI. After I awoke, I received intense speech, occupational and physical therapies as I had to re-learn how to walk, talk and think. I had no short term memory. I do not remember the accident or the day before. When I was released from in-patient rehab, my mom took me and my son back to Nebraska to care for us. While in Nebraska, I received therapy services at Madonna rehab 9am to about 4pm, everyday for about 2 months. My son started kindergarten during this (2005) year in Nebraska. So, when school was out, we moved back to our home in Texas. Since I could no longer work as a pharmaceutical sales rep., I was on another job search. In August 2006, I began working for Easter Seals of Greater Dallas, a non-profit organization providing therapy services to children and adults with autism and other disabilities. We recently merged with the Fort Worth affiliate and are now Easter Seals North Texas. I love my job! It is very rewarding being able to give back to an organization similar to the one that helped me. I work from 7:00am to 2:30pm so that I am home when Dominic gets off the bus. I was the accounting, HR, IT, and development departments until recently, where I now just focus on development and fundraising.
