Today's Featured Biography
Deborah Kuchmak Miller
Thomas and I moved to Portland, Oregon, in 1980 and have lived here ever since, enjoying the beautiful Cascade Mountains, the Pacific Ocean, and our "City of Roses". During the 80's I was active in the Mazamas climbing organization, teaching Basic Mountaineering and Cross Country Skiing in my free time. I have climbed numerous mountains in the Cascade Range including Hood, Adams, St. Helens, North Sister, Middle Sister, South Sister, Washington, Jefferson, and Baker. Participating as a Basic Climbing Instructor allowed me to climb as well as pass on my love of the outdoors to others. Now, I do a little hiking, but leave the mountaineering to others. I enjoy spending time with my family, biking, gardening, and teaching.
I graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1976 with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. I earned a Master's Degree in Education from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, in 1988. My "real" job is teaching; twenty years educating middle school students in writing, literature and social studies with a little math and science occasionally. Five years ago I switched to teaching third graders. What a blast!!! Why didn't someone tell me about this in graduate school? Third graders LOVE everything!!! Their WORK is PLAY! Needless to say, I am passionate about teaching.
Our daughter, Mariah, turned twenty-one this year. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Portland, Oregon, class of 2009. This fall she will be a senior at St. Mary's College of California, majoring in Kinesiology. She plans to go on to graduate school and earn a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. This summer she has an internship with a couple of neuroscientists at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) in Portland. They are doing Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) on people with Parkinson's as well as some other health issues.
Isaac, our son, turned seventeen this year. This fall he begins his senior year at Lincoln High School in Portland, Oregon. His passions are computers, math and science. Most likely he will attend Oregon State University as they have excellent engineering programs. He is planning his Eagle Scout project which will take place this September in Washington Park.
Thomas works as a Project Manager for Electrical Construction Company in Portland, Oregon. He received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Architecture from the University of Nebraska. He is still able to lead mountaineering trips. Memorial Day Weekend he led a group of Mazamas on a climbing trip at Castle Crags, near Mt. Shasta in California. This July he's leading a climbing trip to the Bugaboos in the Purcell Mountains of British Columbia and Alberta, Canada.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
