Today's Featured Biography
Winston Saunders
I'm a graduate of PHS, UW, and UC Berkeley. My wife, Sara, and I met as undergrads and tied the knot in Half Moon Bay, California back in 1985. Our daughter was born in Lausanne, Switzerland and our son in Pasadena, California.
I spent my career as a physicist, working on all sorts of computing technologies. Looking back, it's been quite a journey - starting with FORTRAN programs punched on IBM cards in "Computer Math" at PHS, all the way to building supercomputers for Artificial General Intelligence at Microsoft. Machines today can code better than I could in high school (and than I can now, too). Think of that.
Now that I'm fully retired, I'm embracing a more analog world-view.
I feel lucky to have more time to nurture lifelong hobbies. One, started in art classes at PHS, is watercolor painting. For me, it productively blends passion and frustration, and the process itself slows me down enough to truly connect with my surroundings, especially when I paint outdoors, "en plein air."
My love for skiing, cycling, and hiking - things I started back in high school - is unabated. Last fall, I biked (mostly on dirt and gravel) from Lisbon to Sagres, Portugal. This winter, I'm road-tripping to ski areas in McCall, Kellogg, Sandpoint, and Chewelah, places I haven't visited since 1975. I'll certainly carry fond memories of Pete Berney(RIP) with whom I skied many of those place.
George Bernard Shaw's idea about finding joy in "mighty purpose" really speaks to me. I work with "Lid I-5North," a small but dedicated group with a vision to reunite Seattle neighborhoods split by I-5. So far, we've published a concept study with the UW School of Built Environments and secured city funding for early planning. The project may take decades to fully realize, but it's an honor to be a part of it while I can.
Our most famous classmate and friend, Charley Cross (RIP), used to joke that "we spend our lives getting even for high school." Maybe so, but I also believe that seeds planted during those years also come to good. Maybe I'm just an optimist?
Sara and I celebrate our 40th anniversary this year. We split our time between homes in Seattle and beautiful Sisters, Oregon, with bonus weeks in the Bay Area with grandkids thrown in.
Life really is so rich.
