Today's Featured Biography
Bart Lindquist
Since our Last Reunion
Shortly after out last reunion my wife and I moved to the other Washington to open a Lab ( Legal ) at the main office. I had never lived on the East Coast and we enjoyed exploring the Nation's Capital and surrounding area.
I enjoy history and have read a lot about the Civil and Revolutionary wars but visiting the actual sites is even better. Gettysburg National Park, Manassas National Battle Field. Antietam National Battle Field and Harpers Ferry of John Brown fame.
I continued my treatment at UMMC and explored Baltimore as well. Walters Art Museum, Lexington Market, USS Constellation, National Museum of Dentistry ( Torture Really )and Fort McHenry of Francis Scott Key fame. Sometimes from my room I could see the Bromo Seltzer Clock Arts Tower, competitor of Alka-Seltzer, another landmark of Baltimore. On a dark and raining day in February I visited Edgar Allen Poe Crypt at Westminster Hall ( Available for event rentals ). It was raining so hard that in the court yard the winding cobble stone pathway and current seemed to pull me along. On Edgar's grave Cognac and flowers were placed by Poe toasters. Later after surgery I was able to attend a MLB game between the Baltimore Orioles and the Seattle Mariners, Mariners won!
Living in the DC area made me realize how close everything is. Going to New York, Rhode island, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia is not as far as I thought. Richmond Virginia, Capital of the CSA, is only 100 miles from DC. Lincoln traveled by boat to inspect the fallen city in 1865.
I was able to visit some of the DC attractions, the mandatory Cherry Blossoms in the spring, Arlington National Cemetery, where I recognized the bridge ( From TV in 1963 ) where JFK horse drawn carriage crossed the Potomac River to his final resting place. Nation Gallery of Art, National Air and Space Museum and the Lincoln Memorial.
I was able to attend at least one historical event in DC. I was able to get two Inaugural Presidential tickets. I took a father of a friend of mine and as we were leaving for the Inaugural she said to me Don't lose him, he is the only father I have Her concern was that he did not speak any English and she knew I did not speak a lick of Chinese. We smiled a lot, bowed a bit and used hand signals to navigate our subway trip to the Capital. After losing our fresh fruit lunch at security we found a good spot on the grass near the edge of the crowd and toward our exit and watched the Inaugural and the swearing in. Lots of LED monitors, audio speakers and people, at our distance I believed we did recognize the former President, the new President, the Chief Justice and some of the other dignitaries. After the Inauguration, the crowd which was like a funnel in but was not so much now as we left. My responsibility was still with me like a shadow. We found our self's in the subway three levels below the street, which color subway, blue, white, orange? I thought I better ask? I saw a policeman with his back towards me, then I noticed his Dallas Police shoulder patch and before I could think of anything else I asked him what happened to his Cowboys? (They lost their first playoff game and most fans expected them to run the table) He says I don't know, I am on Suicide watch we both burst out laughing. ( During Inaugurations the authorities bring in a additional 30K LEO from around the country) My charge and I did find our way back and I delivered my friend's father back home as promised.
The DMV area is interesting place to live and explore and I will visit again.
Living in the DMV area confirmed for me that politics like sausage should never be made in public.
