Today's Featured Biography

J. David Keener

After graduation, I started taking classes at Shippensburg U. during the summer of '86. I took as many classes as I could for about 2 years since it was tuition-free (my mother worked there and dependents didn't have to pay tuition). Then I transferred to Penn State to major in Agricultural Engineering. I wanted to design agricultural and/or construction machinery. Unfortunately, I graduated at a time when companies were laying off engineers rather than hiring (spring of '91).

After working at two less than wonderful jobs in C-burg while living with my parents, I decided to go back to school. I went back to Penn State in winter of '93 to work on a Masters degree in Agricultural Engineering. This time, I focused on wood and cold-formed steel structures, an area that I thought would enhance machinery design if I wanted to go that way but also something that would be another area to work.

This time, I actually left school early to take a job in cold-formed steel design that was offered to me. I ended up working on my thesis after work was over each day. It wasn't fun, but I had a job and my own place! Grad school was good for another reason as well, since that's where I met Maura. (I'm living proof that there really is someone for everyone. Maura's first words to me were: "Do you like Jethro Tull and Monty Python?")

After getting married and living in an apartment for awhile, we bought our first (and last) house, a brick Victorian built in 1904. We're slowly making improvements. One and a half years after living here, my initial-sake was born (Julian Dante). Needless to say, fatherhood has been very enlightening.

As for other fun things, I'm still a music nut who is always on the lookout for music with unusual instruments (anyone for Frippertronics, serpent, or single string steel cello?). A related hobby is audio restoration of music made under less than optimal conditions (I think you know what I mean).

PS You may recall that graduating seniors got to state what their post-graduation plans were in the school paper. Unfortunately, this stopped in '85. Even more frustrating was that I had planned what I would write. For the record here it is: "Design and build a stereo system capable of surpassing The Who's in-concert sound level record of 120 dB at 50 yards or join Greenpeace." (Ah, to be young again.)
