Today's Featured Biography
Corey Layman
Hey all! If you were wondering what ever happened to me, here's the scoop...
After graduation, I worked at New York Carpet world for about three years. It wasn't much, but it kept some green in my pockets while I gigged around Asheville with the band(s) I was in during that span. (I think I made a total of $300 playing in three years.) I joined the Navy in 1990. Went in for the Nuclear Power Program. It wasn't just a job, it was an adventure. My 18-month training began after boot camp and shortly before the first Gulf War. I never went overseas because they had already allocated too much money for my schools, so I stayed in Orlando for about 18 months. It was the most stressful time of my life. Got married in Dec of 1990, between duty stations. Went to Charleston SC for the final 6 months of training and failed out with 3 days left. Oh, well. Stayed in Chas'n on the USS Ortolan. My first son was born in 1994, and my ship was decommissioned in 1995. Moved back to Asheville and went to work for my father-in-law. Was there for about three years before neither of us could take it anymore. Ended up doing ADT-type stuff from 1998 until 2001. My daughter and second son were born during that time (1997 and 1999). Went to Digitech International out on Leicester Hwy and worked tech support for two years before moving into the sales dept as a Sales Coordinator/Project Manager. That was a fun job. My youngest was born during my stay there (2002). After a year of that, we decided we could no longer afford to live in Asheville. Housing and cost-of-living eats up the wage scale down there. Heard some good things about Tennessee's wage/expense ratio. Got a job lined up and I moved myself to Goodlettsville in Nov of 2004. The rest of the family followed about a month later. Rented there until we found something to buy and ended up in White House. Between Jennifer's nursing school, 3 kids playing soccer, 1 playing basketball & football, and my own work schedules, we never stop. (Maybe it's too much, but we've managed to pay off half the debt we brought with us.) We found a great church that's all about God's Word - although I struggle mightily trying to live up to it. I sang in the choir for about 2 years then had to ease out because work and school and rehearsals were too much. Now I've gotten into the worship band and am playing bass again. The quality of the musicians around here is incredible. I feel like a beginner, but it's really great to play again. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed it. Working for CIGNA Government Services now, doing Medicare Appeals. Good job, but trying to move somewhere else in the company. Production work wears on you, even if it's at a desk. Anyway, thought it was time to update this a little bit. Hope you all are doing well.
