Derek Shubin
Married Linda Scott-June 1966; Commissioned second lieutenant U.S. Marine Corps June 1966; USMC Basic School June 1966-Dec 1966;
Flight School Pensacola Florida Dec-1966 to Jan 1967 and then designated Naval Aviator;
Jan 1968 to March 1968--aircraft transition to helicopter Boeing-Vertol CH-46 Sea Knight;
March 1968 to April 1968--South Vietnam Marine Corps combat tour with Marine Medium Helicopter squadrons, HMM-265, HMM-261; HMM-161 serving in Danang, Hue-Phu Bai and Quang Tri provinces. May 1969--reported to Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina to join HMM-365 where first child, Clay was born in June 1970; Squadrom sent to Caribbean aircraft carrier assignment then transited Panama Canal for emergency assistance in Peru for earthquake naturtal disaster (great high altitude Anndes mountains flying; return to MCAS New River in Setpember 1970 then dispatched aboard carrier after two weeks at home to eastern Mediterraneoan for mideast crisis (Jordan vs Syria); returned with Italy and Spain stops. Home in November 1970. HMM-365 disbanded and subsequently assigned to HMM-361. Elected to leave the Marine Corps because of family separation effective October 1971. Enrolled at Colorado State University to try to get into the School of Veterinary Medicine. Second child Scott born September 1971 during pre-vet period that was necessary because previous Bachelors Degree did not include all the prerequisites. Was accepted in May 1973. Attended veterinary school from Sept 1973 and graduated early in January 1977. Daughter Krista was born in April 1974 during school. Took boards and was licensed in Colorado, Utah and California. Practiced in Van Nuys, California from Jan 1977 through February 1978 then in Costa Mesa, California Februry 1979 during which son, Chad, was born in May 1978. Practiced in Calabasas, California where buy-in for partnership failed after working there from May 1979 through January 1983. Son, Wade, was born December 1980. Joined a practice and became a partner in Rancho Mirage in Janjuary 1983 and practiced there until June 1992. Wade died in a drowning accident in June 1984. Left for Colorado following a legal battle with the partner that he initiated in an attempt to dismiss from the practice. Began a veterinary practice in July 1992 which grew into a 2-1/2 doctor practice. Sold the practice to an 8 year associate in February 2011 and remained to help the transition until August 2012. I retired at the end of August 2012 and live in Gilbert, Arizona.
We have eleven grandchildren, the last one born September 12, 2012. They range in age from 22 to 3 years as of this writing. Updated May 28, 2016.
