Event Announcement!
Danish Maid continues family tradition
Heidi Anderson was thrilled when she found out she would be the Danish Maid this year because of her fond memories of past Danish Days and former maids.
“When Heidi Nedegaard was the maid (in 1993), I knew I wanted to be a maid because we had the same name and I really admired her,” Heidi said.
As the selection of the Solvang Danish Days Foundation for 2010, Heidi Anderson will preside over this year’s festival on the weekend of Sept. 17-19. Since being selected, she has been busy promoting the three-day event and selling tickets for a raffle in which some lucky winner will get a trip to Denmark.
Heidi is a 2009 graduate of Santa Ynez Valley Union High School and a member of its National Honor Society. She also completed six years of philanthropy work, by volunteering at community events.
“I’ve been to every single Danish Days since I was born, and just love being at the breakfast every year. My favorite part is cooking aebleskiver because my mom taught me how, and it’s something we can do together,” Heidi said.
Now a full-time student at Santa Barbara City College, Heidi plans to transfer to Concordia University in Irvine, where she would like to major in interior design with an emphasis on the organizational aspect of design.
“I love being here in the Valley, and I intend on coming back after experiencing the world and settling down,” she said.
Danish Maids are selected based on several criteria, including Danish ancestry and they time they’ve lived in the Santa Ynez Valley. Candidates must be of high-school age and write an essay about why they want to have the title.
Heidi’s bestefar (grandfather), Frode K. Jensen, is of Danish descent and came to Solvang in 1928 to attend Atterdag College, the Danish Folk school. He was a member of the Danish Brotherhood and conducted its meetings in Danish.
Jensen also was the manager of Pea Soup Andersen’s restaurant from 1929 to around 1940. After that he and her bestemor (grandmother), Helen Jensen — born in South Dakota of Norwegian descent — operated the Sunny Corner Cafe and the Solvang Inn Restaurant.
Later, Heidi’s grandfather became a painting contractor, a member of the Santa Ynez Valley Coordinating Council and a member of various community committees. Her grandmother was a charter member of the Danish Sisterhood.
Heidi’s grandfather’s uncle was “Old Man Block,” a celebrated local artist.
Heidi’s great-uncle, the late Kris Klibo, was a blacksmith who created many ornamental iron works in the Valley. Klibo’s wife Olga was instrumental in making the Buellton Library what it is today, and she resides at the Atterdag Village of Solvang.
Heidi’s Danish great-grandparents, Jens Severin Marius Jensen from Mols Ebletoft, Denmark, and Ane Kristine Jorgine Nielsen from Mariager, Denmark, immigrated to Withee, Wisc. in 1903 after they married. They operated a dairy farm with their five sons. Heidi’s grandfather was the eldest and Uncle Kris the youngest.
Her Norwegian great-grandparents immigrated to South Dakota in the late 1800s and were also farmers.
Being involved with Danish Days has been a long tradition in Heidi’s family. Her mother, Tone Jensen Anderson, started participating in Danish Days as a gymnast under the direction of Viggo Tarnow, and she folk-danced as a youth. She has baked for the aebleskiver breakfast since she was in eighth grade and was once pictured on a postcard of Solvang.
Her father, Michael Anderson, has helped with the aebleskiver breakfast since 1981. Her uncle, Frode Jensen, has been a Danish folk dancer and also pictured on a postcard.
Since 1936, Solvang has hosted Danish Days in honor of its Danish heritage. The large celebration provides a chance for people of all ages to experience traditional Danish festivities such as cooking, singing and dancing.

Allan Aho and Reyna Jensen are, according to their school’s diploma coordinator, “our version of (explorers) Lewis and Clark.”
In turn, the two Santa Ynez Valley Union High School students are the first to earn International Baccalaureate Diploma Award honors. The school board recognized the pair at Tuesday’s meeting.
“We’re very lucky to have two of our finest students at this school,” Superintendent Paul Turnbull said, moments before handing certificates to Aho and Jensen’s father, the latter of whom accepted on Reyna’s behalf. “We congratulate both of them.”
Chris Avery, coordinator for the diploma program, said in a press release about the award recipients: “They blazed a trail of academic excellence and exploration. We are proud of this significant achievement.”
In spite of the students’ success, the school board is looking at the possibility of cancelling the program. The board opted to table the discussion about the program for 2009-10 until the next meeting. Turnbull cited the scholastic exercise’s resource-intensive nature and considerable price tag of $95,000.
“I’m not disappointed it was tabled,” the superintendent said afterward. “It’s a great program, but not necessarily the best program for us at this time. Either way, it’s a difficult decision.”
As part of the meeting’s public comments, one concerned parent argued there wasn’t enough notification about the International Baccalaureate program being listed as “cancelled” on the board’s agenda. (Turnbull pointed out the website hasn’t been updated because the webmaster is on summer break.)
“More parent involvement would be beneficial,” she said.
While the program may be nixed, Aho said the hard work paid off for him.
“It’s pretty rewarding. I was actually sort of reluctant at first, but the (IB) program was worth it. Some of the exams got me college credits,” said Aho, who plans to attend Chapman University in Orange.
One parent at the meeting said certain students shouldn’t be forced to participate and deemed the program a “waste of time.”
Board member Jeffrey Little disagreed, noting that big-name colleges such as the University of Texas are impressed by students with International Baccalaureate credentials. If money is a problem, he said, perhaps it’s time to prioritize the budget.
The diploma program, universally acknowledged for its academic values, features three core requirements essential to the curriculum: theory of knowledge; extended essay and external assessed independent research assignment of 4,000 works of the six main subject areas; and creativity, action and service; a minimum of 150 hours of participation during the two years that allow students to gain real-life experience outside classrooms.
Students who display “good” levels of performance across all half-dozen subjects and achieve a minimum of 24 points (out of 45) earn the diploma. Others receive a certificate.
One thing seems certain, said board member Holly Lindberg: “Once we get rid of the program here, it won’t ever come back.”
The board will discuss the program at its meeting Thursday, July 30.
