How I miss Santa Ynez! I'm working to return! Professionally, I've led a checkered career, from education to corporate, to being director of a large non-profit in Haiti during those violent years of 1993-95, returning to be director of national refugee program in Denver, and now landing in San Antonio more than a year ago.
I'm a writer at heart...preferably fiction, but currently, technical. If anyone has a need for a technical writer--promotional, trade, scientific, annual reports, speeches, whatever--I'll be delighted to appear as the genie with the pen.
My personal life has been surprising for me as well. After UCSB, I went to UCB for a Master's in political science (what turbulent years), then taught, then married...a wildly impetuous moment fitting for the '60's.
Curiously, the marriage took (almost); at least we lasted for 19 years in Hawaii. He was (and is) Pres of a large private university, and we have three wonderful children who are the joy of my life. Unfortunately, we couldn't climb the marital rocks and divorced. I departed for Seattle with children in tow and landed in Bellingham, WA, and did real estate (mom & pop service stations converting to Texaco).
But the spirit and the moment called, and I left for Haiti (with 14-year-old daughter in tow this time) to become director of a large non-profit, frontline operation. We served more than 10,000 people in 41 villages. The culmination came after the Amer invasion when we did a co-joint airlift with Special Forces, a Blackhawk net filled with food for the back country. While there, I bonded with 50 street boys, the most incredible experience of my life.
When I returned to USA, I had difficulty adjusting--such a different way and pace of life. I floundered. Worked in Mexico for a while, landed in Denver where I re-married (after being divorced and lonely for 14 years), and we loved each other, just were not a good match. Four years later, I moved to Texas, and that's where I am now.
I'm working on a filmscript about the Haiti adventures, and I hope to return to CA. (My mother still lives in Lompoc.) My dream (oh my!!)-- a cozy, hillside CA ranch-style Western hacienda nestled in Los Olivos. If asked what I want for Christmas, I think I could recite this as quickly as the "Red Ryder b-b gun" from Christmas Story.
Brook, my oldest child, married his college sweetheart while in college, and they began their family. He's a "headhunter" in the travel/tourism industry. (Anyone want a job?) I have 3 beautiful grandchildren from him and a surprise 4th due this July.
My second, Jon (32), just underwent a successful heart procedure in Denver. (God is good.) Married to a beautiful girl from Sweden, he has a precious 2-year-old. He is Director of Sales Operations for a national computer company.
My baby girl, who was my surprise, is now completing her doctorate in astrophysics at UCLA. She is absolute joy. Still single, she lives with her boyfriend and travels about to conferences and gives talks about her discoveries of new galaxies.
Oh, dear. I've written so much from a stream of consciousness. I suppose these are the highlights. I would enjoy hearing from you. What's going on in your life? How has it been?
Whatever. I wish you all of the blessings that life's joy bring.
