Lara Bonnell Lotze
Okay, so I graduated a bit late after spending senior year on foreign exchange, but I still finished in ‘96! I then spent a few months in Honduras as a freelance missionary of sorts- taught ESL for long enough to know I needed more training, but couldn’t find a program I liked to pursue it when I got back. Met Brian while at UAF part time, got married on winter solstice ‘99 and moved out to Kasigluk where Brian taught and I got roped into tutoring (you guessed it- ESL!) Our son Jacob was born during the two years there. We moved to Prince of Wales Island in SE Alaska for a year. Jonah was born two weeks before we moved back to Fairbanks to be closer to family (and some kind of social scene!) When I couldn’t find the parenting supplies or networking I needed, I helped start a retail store, Blueberry Baby, with a friend from UAF (okay, she graduated from West, but she’s okay, really!)I have been attending UAF for the last 9 years, a couple breaks here and there, and by distance delivery for a while. I may graduate someday if they ever come up with a major I want to graduate in! Currently a linguistics major, but I’m petitioning the theater dept. to add a dance program. Besides taking care of 3 kids (Lena was born in November) a store and taking classes here and there, I also teach Middle Eastern Raqs Sharki (Bellydance) play doumbek (hand drum) and drag my family to every crazy art show I can make it to. I wonder if I can squeeze PTA in there too? Can’t wait to see everyone in June!
