Jennifer Thompson

I attended UAF after Lathrop. Got a B.A. in print journalism with an art minor in 1993. Although my high school years were sketchy at best (ahem), I thrived in college. Great grades. Great gigs. Great fun.

I worked as a photojournalist, editor, writer, photographer, artist, and/or art director for roughly 10 years at a variety of newspapers, magazines, book publishers, design shops, etc. (Spent some time bartending on the side, too!) I left for the East Coast in December of 1994. Had a round trip ticket on Mark Air to return to AK after 6 months. Spent some time in PA, then -- when Mark Air went out of business -- moved to Washington, DC, on a whim. I've been in the DC area ever since.

I met my husband Chuck as a blind date while living in Maryland in February 1997. We married in November 2003. The only pitter patter of little feet around our house currently is that of 2, 100-pound labrador retrievers.

Chuck has a master's and Ph.D. in Industrial Organizational Psychology from George Mason University in Virginia. He currently works at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. He also attended Wabash College in Indiana for his undergrad studies -- a double major in psych and poli sci. He's originally from Indiana/Ohio. He graduated from high school in '86.

In 2000, I joined a start-up education company called K12 Inc. as one of its first few employees. Currently I am the Director of Program Management, responsible for the creation of some really cool multimedia curriculum products. My group oversees large teams of writers, photographers, editors, designers, subject matter experts, and more around the world. The company went public in 2007 (see "LRN" on NYSE).

When I'm not cracking the whip at work, it's aimed in my husband's direction. We bought a fixer upper in Alexandria, VA, in 2004 and are constantly remodeling. There just aren't enough hours in the day most days. Spending summers by the pool doing absolutely NOTHING is the best! Also still into photography, drinking games, and hockey (LET'S GO CAPS!).

I try to visit Alaska every year or so for a marathon bar hop between southcentral and the interior in the summer or a snowmachine trip (and bar hop) in the AK Range in the spring. Last time I was back was the summer of 2007 (I've got movies of us at the Mecca to prove it!). Still have tons of family, property, and a few friends up there. The lower 48's great, but Alaska will always be my home! Birch Lake is looking like a nice place to retire ... :-)
