Pamela Flahive Keene

    Life has been a wonderful ride for me. I returned to the Portsmouth area in the late 1970’s, and I have felt a sense of fulfillment in the years following. My husband and I met in college and shared an interest in exploring the Maine coast and Portsmouth. Such happy memories we have of those days. We finally moved close to Penobscot Bay and Mt. Desert Island to explore the beauty of the region for several years. At one point we were living close to the University of Maine in Orono where Jeff completed his Masters Degree in Education. We soon relocated to York Maine, and Jeff accepted a job offer in the Berwicks.
    Birth of our daughter Melanie soon followed, and we moved to Eliot at about the same time. I was delighted to be in the Portsmouth locale once again. Jeff took an administrative position in a school district in the area and has been a principal in Maine and New Hampshire. Our coastal explorations then focused on the north shore and Boston including Nantucket where we continue to vacation.
    We have had a long line of Irish Setters over the years. I started with a pup high school nurse Doris Regan gave my sister who babysat for her three children. We have had six Irish Setters in all and love the breed dearly. We run them frequently at Jenness Beach in Rye.
    Our daughter was a complete joy throughout childhood, and we both spent much time at Strawbery Banke. I learned a great deal in the horticulture department, and Melanie’s interest in history was satisfied. My knowledge and enthusiasm for gardening gained at Strawbery Banke has prepared me for landscaping my own yard.
    We live on the Piscataqua River and share a common deep-water pier with neighbors. As a teen our daughter commuted via her Boston Whaler when she worked in Portsmouth. She and her husband now live in Connecticut and are both attorneys and parents of a year-old son. I have been more than fortunate to work in youth services for nearly 25 years at the Portsmouth Public Library, which is now located next to the middle school.
    It’s been a good life and my days have been filled with much satisfaction and joy. I loved my high school days at PHS and especially my senior year. It has been so nice sharing these thoughts with you.
