Today's Featured Biography
Greg Gardner
My adolescence came to an end about 1980. I don’t remember the 70s because I was there. In 1980 I started the gradual process of becoming like my parents, (except for their taste in music). Started a career, got married, had a wonderful daughter, now I am looking at the allure (but also the gapping dark maw), of retirement.
I’m thinking “what the heck just happened?” I remember walking off the graduation/football field, and expecting to embark on a free-love, rock & roll, back to nature, communal sojourn across the county, living a life of new-found freedom and enlightenment. The next thing I remember I’m living “my-parents-like” life style. I even found myself (with a mortgage), living in a home just walking distance from Lincoln. I could walk over and watch the CDC workers going to and from work there, and watch other high school football teams play on own football field.
Now the mortgage (on a subsequent house) is close to ending, my daughter is degreed and gainfully employed (and I never see her much, as my parents used to say to me), and I’m looking forward to pulling the plug, bail out of the office, dump the stress and get on with what comes next. Hey, at least I’m not wearing black wingtips and black socks with my Bermuda shorts, (yet).
When I hear “The Who” on the radio and they sing; “I hope I die before I get old”, I think who are these guys? Are they nuts!? Are they some 70s rock band? I don’t remember, (just like that college chemistry class on my transcript they say I took). That was in the 70s.
