Today's Featured Biography
Bruce Hemming
After High School I attended BYU. Harold Hendricks was my freshman roomate. I served a mission to Austria from 70-72. Then returned to BYU. In April 73 I married Caroline McDaniel (BHS '70)in the Salt Lake Temple. We continued at BYU where I completed a BS degree in microbiology and chemistry. She completed her BA degree in music education. I continued graduate studies in biochemistry at Univ. of CA-Riverside and completed my MS degree at BYU in biochemistry (77) where I worked for one year on staff teaching and conducting research before moving to Bozeman with our first two children to pursue the PhD. degree in Plant Pathology. After our 3rd child was born and I finished the PhD in March of 1982, we moved to St. Louis, MO to work for Monsanto Company as they started up their biotechnology program. After 9.5 years with Monsanto and an addition two children (5 total), I launched a new microbiology lab, Microbe Inotech Laboratories, Inc. Where I continue to this day as President and CEO as we enter our 28th year. So you can see I am still thick in the midst of thin things. I served on the St. Louis MO Stake High Council for a couple of years and as Bishop of the Parkway Ward for 6.5 years. I currently have the privilege to continue to serve as a shift coordinator and Ordinance worker in the St. Louis, MO temple. Caroline passed away of cancer Oct. 22nd, 2009 in St. Louis. We have 17 living grandchildren, our then 11th borne Dec. of 2009 passed away of SIDS the following March, 2010. In these 40-45 years, I have learned the following: 1) marriage is no big thing, it's alot of little things 2) it's not sufficient to be right, one must also act right 3) children and grandchildren are not people to be molded but to be unfolded 3) success is not what you are driven to achieve, but what you can quietly understand. I appreciate you all and your friendship! Addendum No. 1: On Oct. 22nd 2009 my wife of 36 years passed away as a result of cancer in St. Louis, on the same day a about 7 hours later her second brother of four, Alvin McDaniel, passed away of a sudden stroke in Idaho Falls. She had turned the "me and now" into "us and always". Just after High School, she had given me a book with many quotes. One Chinese Proverb stood out to me: Keep a green bough in your heart and the singing bird will come. The songbird came and build a nest, gave birth to 5 cooing doves which grew into screaming eagles, who flew off to repeat the cycle. Now the songbird has flown heavenward and I'm left to determine whether I'm an evergreen or deciduous tree. I've also learned that patriarchal speak in her blessing of "long and happy life" can also mean "immortality and eternal life", His work and glory. Addendum No. 2. I have learned that one has to choose to be happy, come what may. Once I did that blessings weren't far off. On July 23rd, 2010 I married Sandi McCracken Birch, whose husband, Neil, was killed in a bike/auto accident in Teton Basin, 3 months before Caroline's passing. We were married by her father in the Rexburg Temple for the period of our mortal lives in 2010. There are now 50 in my immediate family including ourselves. On the business side we built out and moved into a new laboratory close to our satellite lab in 2014, which is known as the Helix Center Core Lab. The Helix Center, now 6 years old, is a biotech pre-seed incubator with about 25 entrepreneurial start-up companies. We operate the core lab where I serve as the Executive Director for the St. Louis Economic Development Partnership serving St. Louis City and County. The open house for our main lab was held June 25th, 2014. My company, the MiL inc., also owns a 49% interest in Microbe Scan LLC where I serve as managing partner and CEO. My partner, Dr. Michael Ndengele, is a native Kenyan, so in 2017 we started a company, Microbe Scan Ltd. in Kenya. We often come to Star Valley Ranch Wyoming where the summerhome my parents built was purchased in 2017 from my sister, Rita, her shares being added to ours as the sole owners now. We return often also to "Mecca" since my wife, Sandi, is from Shelley, where she worked for the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in IF. I am a wanted man in Idaho, since some would like to shoot me for bringing her to St. Louis. Be assured however that Idaho is home. For the last 2.5 yrs I have been serving as an Executive Secretary to Elder Paul F. Hintze, General Authority Seventy in the Idaho/North Central America Area. So Sandi and I are getting thin in the midst of thick things now.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
