Today's Featured Biography
Margaret Nuttall Marriott
After graduating, I went to work as a maid at Lake Hotel in Yellowstone Park for the summer of 1965. While there, I met a very nice and interesting young man, who would later become my husband. His name was Dale Marriott, who grew up in Excelsior Springs, MO and was raised as a Southern Baptist. We only had about 4-5 dates before our work in Yellowstone ended, but we continued to keep in touch with one another through letters.
I attended BYU, while he finished his last semester at the School of Mines in Rolla, MO. We were able to see each other over the Christmas break. Then I attended another semester at BYU and he attended a semester of graduate work at University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. He was baptized a member of the LDS church while there.
The summer of 1966 took me to the Teton's to work for the summer and Dale was headed to Semi-Valley, CA, to begin his career in computers. He stopped in to see me at Colter Bay where I was working as a cabin maid and decided to stay for the summer. He worked as an assistant supervisor in the laundry at Jackson Lake Lodge. We became engaged there in the Tetons and were married that November in Liberty, MO.
While working for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, KS, Dale was about to be drafted into the Vietnam War, so he joined the Air Force as an officer and trained as a pilot. We lived in Del Rio, TX for that training and later transferred to Biloxi, MS, for computer maintenance training school. We had our first baby, a little boy (Jonathan) while there in Biloxi, and I became a stay-at-home wife and mother.
After Dale completed his Air Force duties, we moved to Kansas City, MO. We were sealed as a family in the Salt Lake Temple shortly after. Dale worked for the City of Kansas City, MO, as a computer programmer. We were blessed with two more boys (Christopher and Paul) before moving to Aurora, CO.
Dale began working for the city of Aurora as its first data processing manager and director, all within a period of eight years. I became involved with the Cub Scouts and La Leche League (a group of women teaching good mothering through breastfeeding) and Dale got involved with the Boy Scouts as a Scoutmaster. We also had a little girl (CheRee) and another little boy (Todd) before moving to Omaha, NE.
While in the Omaha area, Dale worked as a Director of Computer Services for Federal Land Bank. Both of us continued being involved with Scouting and I continued as a La Leche League leader. Our last baby, another little boy (Scott), was born here, which gave us five boys and one girl. After two and a half years there, we moved back to the Denver area and later moved to Colorado Springs, where we spent almost 19 years. Dale worked for El Paso County there as Director of Information Services. I went back to school to gain some employable skills and learned how to use the computer. I began working as a word processor and doing data entry work in 1988. I really appreciated being able to stay at home all those years while my kids were young and not have to work until my last child entered 1st grade.
Dale and I retired from the Scouting program after 20 years of service and I, also retired from being a La Leche League Leader after 15 years of involvement. It was a little sad to leave them both behind, but it was the beginning of another season in our lives. I continued to take courses at the community college while working and taking care of family. It was difficult and rewarding but, at times, I missed the ability to stay at home whenever I wanted.
In 2005, we moved back to the family farm in MO where Dale grew up and we love it here. We now have five grandsons and five granddaughters. Dale has served in a number of Church callings, including 2nd Counselor in the Bishopric and Ward and Stake Clerk. He was set apart as the first Stake Clerk of the Independence, MO Stake by Spencer W. Kimball. I have served in the Primary and RS organizations as a teacher, secretary and counselor and ward librarian. We both keep busy staying involved with family and church activities plus vacations and family reunions here and there. Our family farm also keeps us busy. All of the years we have been married, we rarely got to live close to family, but now, we can see Dale’s family often and life is good.
