Today's Featured Biography
Jennifer Steele Christensen
After 20 years, I still haven't figured out what I want to be when I grow up! Primarily, I'm busy raising kids, but I've enjoyed doing a lot of other things "on the side." Currently, I work part-time as a school social worker at an elementary school in Logan, and I also do some development work for the Child & Family Support Center of Cache Valley. I will finish up a master's degree in social work in August, and I'm getting excited so see what the future holds.
What I'd really like to do is find an intersection between social work and journalism. I currently do some contract work for Utah Public Radio, and I write for the Deseret News. I'm a strong believer that everyone has a story to tell...
For fun, our family is involved in kyuki-do, a Korean mixed martial art. Honestly, what I really feel like lately is a taxi driver and a drill sergeant, shuffling five kids to all their activities and hounding them to practice their instruments. When it comes to helping them with their homework, sadly, my children have made it clear to me that I'm not smarter than a fifth-grader!
When I’m not doing my homework or helping the kids with theirs, I enjoy baking, making chocolates, playing the piano and reading. I used to like scrapbooking, but I haven’t done anything with that since 2002! My third kid did me in, and I gave up because I realized that I’d never be able to keep up!
For any of you aren’t completely bored by now, here’s the last 20 years in a nutshell:
• I met my husband in a calculus class at Utah State University. We got married in 1993.
• We graduated from USU in 1995 and moved to Mesa, AZ the next day after commencement. My husband had a job with Motorola, and we lived in AZ for four scorching years.
• I went to Russia in 1996 to volunteer in an orphanage. It was a life-changing experience that kind of cemented the “I-want-to-be-a-social-worker-even-if-I’ll-never-make-any-money” thing.
• I entered the Mommy Zone in 1997 and have been living there in a daze ever since.
• Our little family moved back to Utah in 1999. We lived in Mountain Green for eight years, with the exception of a 6-month hiatus that we spent in the Denver area.
• In 2007, my husband got a job that took us back to Cache Valley.) We’ve been in Wellsville ever since.
I made some life-long friends at Clearfield High, and it’s amazing to see where we’ve ended up. Even though I’m depressed about being old and fat, I’m really looking forward to the reunion. ‘See you in August!
