Today's Featured Biography
Stephen Safos
Gosh, where to start? OK, here goes. After my very fortunate graduation from South Houston High School (Thank you Mrs. Cox for rounding up that second semester geometry grade to a "D"). I felt my best option was to join the Navy and hence, spent the next four years maturing. Upon my discharge in San Francisco, CA I made the decision to stay in the area because I liked it and the weather is great...no humidity. At this point I was ready to continue my education and applied to several universities but quickly realized that my less then stellar academic high school transcript did not qualify me for U.C. Berkeley or Stanford, imagine that. Oh well, there was the local JC, Alameda Junior College. As faith would have it, on the first day of the first class I met this absolutely drop dead gorgeous redhead of Welsh heritage that made me immediately realize two things about myself. One, I have a incredible weakness for redheads and two, this one wasn't going to get away! Andrea and I were married a year later in September of 1972. We have been working on this marriage thing for the past 34 years and have it almost figured out....I think. Anyway, three years later, I did graduate from San Francisco State University and continued on to Grad school to study Research Psychology. I found research psychology boring and never pursued a career in the field. Throughout the years, I have had the opportunity to do a variety of different things including:
Teaching psychology at a Junior College for one semester to discover that I was not a teacher, bless those who can do this. Became a commercial underwater diver and even worked for the Alameda Country Sheriff's department as a Rescue/Recovery Diver for five years. This was a little more to my liking but short lived, thanks to California politics. Ultimately, I ended up working in sales within the food industry where I currently fill a position for a produce packaging company.
Back to where I left off before the job outline. Andrea and I have made our home in the San Francisco Bay Area (Did I mention there is NO HUMIDITY?) for the past 34 years moving around a few times and finally settling in Dublin CA, about 45 miles southeast of San Francisco. During that time, we had two children, Nikolaos, born in 1978 and Stephanie in 1985. Our son followed in Dad's footsteps, spent four years in the Navy and is currently completing his studies at a Bible College in North Carolina. He is planning to return to service in the Navy as a Chaplin. Our daughter is graduating from College in December of this year ('06). In January, she will head for Boston to spend some time with "Mr. Right"...ughhhhhh and meet his family. They will return to the San Francisco area in May of '07 so "Mr. Right" can get to know her side of the family. Anyone have any contacts with the FBI/CIA? I want to do a little background check on this guy. Side note: I have come to the conclusion that men need to under go a psychological evaluation before they become fathers of daughters to be sure they can handle the pressure! I've been told that I'm just a wee bit too protective and on occasion a tad over the top.
So that is kind of a brief 40 year recap of my life. I know Andrea and I are getting use to the empty nest life style as we love our kids to visit but wonder how long they plan to stay? Neither of our children are married and therefore no grand kids which is fine as I am too young to have grand kids. I was going to end this Bio but thought I'd list a few things that I always felt were exciting times so far in my life.
1. My marriage to that absolutely drop dead gorgeous redhead, now a blond...Hmmmmmmm!
2. The birth of my children. Awesome, absolutely awesome!!
3. The 7.2 Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989, that was a 12 on an excitement scale of 10.
4. I went through a typhoon while on a small US Navy Destroyer in 1969, I really thought my life was over.
5. And lastly but most importantly is my relationship with Jesus Christ. Talk about excitement!
That's it, my fingers are tired. I look forward to seeing everyone at the '07 reunion.
P.S. I'll may have to forgo the golf game that is planned. I have been trying to learn this game for at least 20 years and anything resembling a consistent game still eludes me. I've tried everything from duct taping the club to my hands to super gluing my chin to my chest. Nothing works! But then again, I'm a glutton for punishment so I just may have to sign up.
