Today's Featured Biography
Martha (LYNNE) Estes
I graduated from UT-Austin in 1963 and married. I taught in Austin ISD, Houston ISD, South Houston High School, and Alief ISD for a total of 30 years; edited textbooks for 2 years; and ranched. After my retirement I moved to the ranch given me by my parents where I make my home. I cared for each of my parents in their last years in Brenham.
In the latter part of 2004 and forward I have devoted much of my time in opposition to the Trans-Texas Corridors & working FOR a fiscally responsible Texas Transportation Policy that does NOT use Public Private Partnerships (P3s or PPPs) and called Comprehensive Development Agreements in TX, (or CDAs)to build our highways. Those P3s (typically with "thousand page contracts") last for 40 or 50 years, GUARANTEE large profits to the concessionaires regardless of whether there is traffic using them, prevent the construction of other free relief roads in the area, etc.
I continue to send some research to TERRI HALL who leads a citizens group called TURF which serves Texans by lobbying in Austin and developing & working with grassroots groups in counties across Texas. She is known in states across the US whose informed citizens have the same concerns about burdening generations to come through the use of P3 contracts to design, build, and operate toll roads. TERRI HALL is frequently quoted in numerous Texas newspapers and others like the New York Times and Washington Post.
One such P3 TX toll road between Seguin and Austin has attained "junk bond" status and is close to default. GUESS WHO is left "holding the bag"?? The tax payers of Texas is the correct answer.
