Today's Featured Biography
John Bercher
That is the first time that I have seen my Senior photograph; I could go the rest of my life without ever seeing it again. What a nose!
Here's my life:
Immediately after graduating, I ran off to join the Marines. For eleven years, I traveled and fought (more symbolically than physically) and drank my way through life. In the midst of all that, my life gained direction and determination. Maybe, I grew up a little. I definitely grew into my nose.
I was in Cyprus when I decided that I was ready to leave the Marines. That little country was pivotal in my live. There, I fell madly in love with a California girl, Sarah. Over the course of my fifteeen-month stint, I convinced her that I was pretty okay too.
Digression: One more thing about Cyprus before I get back to the woman I marry: I also met by best friend there. Our mantra was "One cool thing a week." I know, not very profound, but it was our motto, and we lived by it.
Sarah and I decided to try our luck with a long distance relationship. Thanks to the relatively new technologies known as email and instant messaging, we survived the distance. During that time, I finished my final enlistment and applied to college.
While I really disliked high school (no offense to those who may read this), I absolutely loved college. I loved learning--I still do. I was a great student too (unlike my trials in high school). And it was quite easy with the moral support that my wife (then girlfriend, then fiance, and finally wife) gave me. If I could, I would return to school today. Somehow, I don't think I could get a note from Sarah.
Digression: At my wedding, my Best Man and best friend toasted my wife and I, "Here's to the one cool thing this week." (I am an extremely fortunate person.)
We now live in the DC area, and I work for Telecommunications Development Corporation. TDC is a small company based in Washington, DC. I am currently working as a consultant to the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority.
My wife and I are very fortunate to be the proud parents of Molly Elizabeth and Samuel Ashburn.
Adorable, right?
Like many of us out there, I had no idea where I would be and--more accurately--who I would be. But here I am. I'm all grown up, but very much still a kid. And always looking for that one cool thing a week.
What else: lived in Japan, learned the language, left Japan, forgot the language; got shot, got better; got some tattoos, stuck with them; did a couple security details for Albright; fought in a war, returned to pacificism; met some truly incredible people, married one of them; went to a couple games at Fenway Park; wrote a bunch of stuff that will never get published, and I write a bunch of corporate stuff everyday that I have to publish.
I have a beautiful family, a great job, and we just bought our dream home--an abso-freaking-lutely great life. Most important in all of this is that my family and I are happy. And I am certain that the best is yet to come.
