Leo Simpson

After 2 years at Tenn Tech, my family moved to N.C. and I graduated from N.C. State in chemical engineering. After working for DuPont Nomex a while, I went to the Univ of Pittsburgh for a MBA and then the Univ of Colorado for a Ph.D. in Entrepreneurship. I was a pioneer in entrepreneurial education when I joined the Univ of N.Dakota as one of the first 50 professors of entrepreneurship in the U.S. After UND, I taught at Eastern Washington Univ in Spokane for 24 years, Western Kentucky Univ. in Bowling Green as an endowed chair for 6.5 years, and I have been the Lawrence K Johnson Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship at Seattle Univ for six years. After 46 years of being a professor, I will retire from full-time education in June of 2015.
I had two wives from 1970-77 and 1984-90(one at a time). Some of you may remember the second one from our 25th reunion. I have a son, Travis(38), from the first marriage who married his high-school sweetheart, Shellie(at least one of us got it right) and they have three wonderful children, Lauren(9), Thomas(3), and Grayson(0.7). They like to visit my lake home on Hayden Lake in Idaho (near Spokane and Coeur d'Alene--"core da lane")where I plan to retire. It is a beautiful 8 mile, deep-water lake with surrounding mountains and evergreen forests. I caught a 13 pound Rainbow Trout, 21 Crappie, and a Kokanee salmon off my dock in the same afternoon this past summer. Upon retirement, I plan to fish, kayak, write poetry and a novel, enjoy the healthy environment and visit Old Hickory to visit my brother Lanny and my high school friends.
I have traveled the world enjoying scuba, whitewater rafting, cultural explorations, and sightseeing--including 5 months on the Gold Coast of Australia where I taught at Griffith University (a beautiful tropical beach). My most meaningful experience was raising Travis as a single parent from when he was a baby. In addition, I have enjoyed substantial community engagement assisting the homeless and those less fortunate. Many times during these 52 years, I have thought of my 12 years at DuPont and smiled as I remembered things we did. Little did we know how ideal our lives were in the "Ozzie and Harriet" world of Old Hickory in those days. I am proud of my heritage with you in Old Hickory and I look forward to (hopefully) spending time with you.
