Dennis Bottorff
Dennis C. Bottorff currently serves as Managing General Partner of Council Capital, a private equity firm. He graduated from DuPont High School in 1962, received his B.A. in electrical engineering from Vanderbilt University in 1966 and his M.B.A. from Northwestern University in 1968.
He began his career in banking in 1968 at Commerce Union Bank in Nashville. After serving in numerous positions including the Head of Retail Banking, Strategic Planning, Corporate and International Banking, he was named President in 1981 and CEO shortly thereafter. Commerce Union merged with Sovran Financial in 1987. Mr. Bottorff became President of Sovran and continued in the position when Sovran merged with C&S Bank in Atlanta creating the nation’s fifth largest bank. Mr. Bottorff returned to Nashville in 1991 to become CEO of then troubled First American Bank. After its successful turnaround and rebuilding, AmSouth Bancorporation acquired First American in 1999. Mr. Bottorff served as AmSouth’s Chairman until his retirement in January 2001. Through his career in banking, he served in several industry leadership positions including directorships with the Tennessee Banking Association, The American Banking Association and The Financial Services Roundtable.
His corporate board experience includes serving as a member of the Board of Directors of 11 companies from pre-revenue startups to Fortune 500 companies. In 2007, as Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee of the Board of Directors of Dollar General Corporation, he oversaw the process that culminated in the sale of Dollar General to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. for $7 billion. As Vice Chair of the Vanderbilt University Board of Trustees, a board he joined in 1991, Denny has twice chaired the search committees for a new Chancellor, including the most recent search concluded in early 2008. In 2006, he was nominated by the President of the United States to the board of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the nation's largest public utility, where he served as Chairman from April 2010 to January 2012.
In addition to his business activities he is highly involved in community affairs and has held several leadership positions on numerous community boards including: Chair of the Tennessee Educational Lottery Corp., Cabinet Chair of the Symphony Concert Hall Campaign, Chair of the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, Chairman of the Board of United Way, The Nashville Symphony, The Chamber of Commerce, The Children’s Hospital, and Titans Advisory Board.
Denny and his wife Jean have been married for over 47 years, have two children, Todd and Chad, both married, and have five grandchildren. They are active members of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Nashville.
