Priscilla Holdren Dorward

After graduation, I trained in radiography at St Clare’s Hospital School of X-Ray Technology in Schenectady, N.Y., where I met my future husband, David Dorward, an undergraduate at Union College. After graduating in 1963, I worked at Harkness Pavilion, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Centre in New York until 1966.
We married in 1966 and sailed a week later for England, where he did his PhD at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. I worked as a senior radiographer at the old Charing Cross Hospital off Trafalgar Square.
In 1969, we moved to Freetown, Sierra Leone, were my husband lectured at Fourah Bay College. We returned to Britain in 1972, where our two daughters, Jennifer and Elizabeth, were born. Thirty-two years ago, we moved to Melbourne, Australia, where my husband had a university appointment as director of the African Research Institute at LaTrobe University.
I returned to work when the girls were in primary school and am still working part-time. David retired at the end of 2006.
We enjoy the theatre, concerts, dinning out and travelling. Recently we’ve been able to take an annual round-the-world trip. In 2005, we visited relatives in America, then Barcelona, Lisbon and two weeks in Morocco and on to Singapore. In 2006, Thanksgiving in America, then onto Denmark, London and Bangkok. 2007, we went to the Outer Banks in North Carolina, celebrated our wedding anniversary in Charleston, on to Florida, before going to Ghana for two weeks (David gave his teaching library- 3,500 books to the University of Cape Coast), then back to Melboune via South Africa. Last year we brought both daughters, our son-in-law, and grandchildren to America for a family reunion in Maine, a trip through New England and David’s 50th Reunion, then Paris and Bangkok.
Our younger daughter is married to Andrew Coulter and lives near us; we have two wonderful grandchildren, James David Coulter (born 2005) and Ella Jane Coulter (2007), who we see every week. Jennifer, our elder daughter, lives in London, where she manages a travel agency.
