Today's Featured Biography
Linda Kent Heyl
Following graduation from high school, I attended Susquehanna University, and during the summers between semesters I worked as a Psychiatric Aide at the Selingsgrove State School and Hospital. It was then that I became passionate about improving the lives of people with disabilities. I graduated from Susquehanna in 1963 with degrees in Bio-Chemistry and Psychology, and worked as a Bio-Research Technician for Baltimore Biological Laboratories until the birth of our first child. After staying home for two years, I accepted a position with the National Children's Center in Washington, D.C., where I taught a class of special needs teenagers. As our family grew to include 4 children, I took a hiatus from my career to raise our little ones. During this period, I worked part-time as a columnist/reporter for a local newspaper, and as the Office Manager for a private business. I was very active in school, church, scouts and community sports activities, and joined Norm in becoming involved with our County's Habitat for Humanity affiliate. A highlight with Habitat was having the opportunity to work with former President Jimmy Carter in a "blitz build" in D.C. When I returned to full-time employment, I was Program Coordinator and then Program Director for one of the County's state-supported agencies serving adults with developmental disabilities. Six years later, I accepted an offer from another state-regulated agency to be Director of their Supported Employment and Community Residential Services Programs, and I remained there until my retirement. Over the years I have seen the movements for de-institutionalization and community inclusion for the mentally and physically challenged population become a reality, and I hope that I have made a contribution to these movements.
After living nearly 40 years in Maryland, we moved to Florida in early 2004. We have 10 grandchildren (6 boys and 4 girls) who are the light of our lives. Two live just 10 miles from us, and we see the others frequently. Living close to Disney gives us the opportunity to share exciting times with them at the "Happiest Place on Earth." We also enjoy traveling, spending time with all our wonderful family, and participating in the special events and activities that Central Florida has to offer.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
