Today's Featured Biography
Elenora Markunas Heffner
After Bucknell, I moved to Connecticut in fall of 1963 to work on my Master's at Trinity College (MA1967) and to teach Junior High French in a suburb of New Haven.
I met Reid Heffner, a med student at Yale and we were married in July 1965. We stayed in New Haven until 1969 while he finished his neuropathology residency. I finished five years of teaching and our daughter Honora was born 10/16/1968.
We then moved to Larchmont, NY for a year. Reid's commute into New York City convinced us that we didn't want to live there.
To fulfill his military obligation, we moved to Washington, DC in 1970 where our son Rusty (Reid Russell Heffner III) was born. I played a lot of tennis and took care of two little kids. After Reid finished his Army commitment, we finally looked for a place to settle (at ages 35 and 32). Buffalo, NY needed a neuropathologist and we've been here ever since. It has been a wonderful place to raise children, enjoy Lake Erie, and benefit from abundant theater, music, and sports.
I went back to teaching when the children were in school fulltime, joining the faculty of the Buffalo Seminary, a non-sectarian girls' high school. I taught either French or English and served as half of the school's Development Office where I learned about record and file keeping and using computers big time. In 1999 I became Assistant to the Chairman in the Department of Computer Science at the University at Buffalo. The job was perfect for me. I managed the department's finances, planned their budget, oversaw a technical and secretarial staff, interfaced for the department with the rest of the University and, in general, saw that operations ran smoothly. In 2000, I accepted a promotion within the University to become the Assistant Director of a public policy/economic development institute affiliated with the Law School. Its involvement with the regional public dovetailed nicely with my volunteer interests.
I retired in early 2008, which makes traveling to our grown children and our condo in Florida much easier. Reid still works, but he can usually juggle his schedule to travel too.
Our daughter Honey is a pathologist in Cincinnati, OH. She and her orthopaedist husband have two daughters, Emily 10 and Abigail 8. The girls come to Buffalo each summer for some one-on-one serious grandparenting! I think I look forward to that visit as much as they do.
Our son Rusty has a newly-minted PhD in Alternative Fuel Technology for the University of California Davis. When he went to grad school after working in the software industry, I didn't even understand what he was planning to study. He and his family live in Washington, DC. They have two small children, Evelyn almost 3 and Reid Edward almost 3 months. It's nice to have them on the East Coast, so I can visit often to give some infant relief.
My at-home time is occupied with being a volunteer docent for a Frank Lloyd Wright historic house, serving on a hospital board, and playing tennis.
