Norman Heyl

Upon High School graduation, I worked in Sunbury for 2 years before attending Bloomsburg State College (University) in the fall of 1961. I graduated in three and a half years with an Accounting degree, and began a career with the United States General Accounting Office (GAO)(now known as the Government Accountability Office) in Washington, D.C. Although I spent my entire working career at GAO, my assignments were many and varied. I was first assigned to the Senate Ethics Committee to evaluate spending by a prominent Senator, and later to managing all GAO work at the Small Business Administration, including findings that were used in the Watergate investigations. I also had an assignment for 6 years where I made decisions on behalf of the Comptroller General (the head of GAO) which involved paperwork reductions imposed on businesses by independent regulatory agencies. On behalf of GAO, I have performed work and traveled throughout the US and Canada, as well as in 5 European and 2 Far-East countries. During my GAO career I have written all or part of nearly 50 reports which were addressed to various members of Congress. My most memorable assignments were evaluating US risks in automated trading on foreign stock and commodities exchanges, assessing the development and use of DOD's ADA programming language, reviewing state child support enforcement automated systems, and evaluating computer programs during the Y2K conversion. After 38 years of Federal Service with GAO, I retired at the end of 2002. Linda and I moved to Florida in early 2004, and live near Disney World in Clermont.

Throughout my working career I was continually involved in our childrens' school activities by holding several PTA offices and coaching after-school sports. I was also involved with church activities as an Elder and Chairman of mission projects. In addition, I have been involved with Habitat for Humanity, was appointed to it's International Board of Advisors, was an officer in a local Habitat project, and worked on several Habitat houses, including a Jimmy Carter work camp.
