Randall Booth
Right after graduation I started taking summer classes at CSU (now UCO) the summer went great. In the fall however I discovered the collage party life and, well… flunked out…booooo. I worked a few different jobs around town. Then I met a girl that I thought was grand and we got hitched. Things didn’t work out and it only lasted a couple of years before we divorced, probably early 1995. Single, broke and with no wheels, I swallowed my pride and moved back in with mom and dad who were living in Ponca City at the time…boooo again!!! I cut my hair and found a job at the local Wal-Mart Supercenter. Well, as you may know Ponca is kinda a small town and I started hanging around some of my co-workers and a few of us became very good friends. In this group was a really sweet girl (Laurie) who was really nice to talk to and we ended up spending a lot of time together. I don’t know how it happened because neither of us were looking for a relationship, but we ended up dating and then fell in love. After a about 6 months I moved in with her and her roommate. About 6 months later I popped the question…she said yes. We were married September 23, 1996 and sometime between the time she said yes and the day we got married our first child (Keri) was conceived. Well, the roommate moved out and we followed my parents to Missoula, Montana. I guess we were just trying to get the hell out of Ponca City and Oklahoma too. We were young and looking for adventure.
February 17, 1997 in Missoula, Montana my first child, Keri was born. Soon after I decided to get my ass back into school and get a degree, a Wal-Mart paycheck just wasn’t goanna cut it. I wanted to be a good example for my child and provider for my family. After a year or so we came to the realization that Oklahoma is one of the best places in the world to raise a family and Montana was just too cold for us. I took this opportunity to realize a personal dream…graduating from the University of Oklahoma. So in the summer of 1999 we packed up a U-Haul, strapped the kiddo between us and our used Grand-Am to a trailer on the back and headed south toward Oklahoma. We first landed in a small town called Copan, where Laurie was from. We stayed with some of her family and I helped with the family business for the summer while we waited for the Fall Semester at OU to begin; which could not come soon enough. After all of the living with family we vowed NEVER to live with family again. We were ready to be on our own, even if it was in a dumpy student housing apartment…it was our dumpy apartment.
In December of 2002, I did it. I graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelors Degree in Journalism. And in April of 2003 Destiny, our youngest was born. About that same time I started working for Cox Communications as a production assistant but the pay wasn’t very good and neither was the chance to progress so I changed careers and started working in the Oil and Gas industry. We have since bought a small house in Del City (looking to move toward Edmond) and I work for a very busy Exploration and production company that drills 3 to 4 wells a month.
Now as I get older, and watch my daughters grow, I realize how I squandered away my high school years. I have been in contact with only one person from our class, Monte Archer. Other than that I haven’t spoken to anyone. But I’m gonna keep trying. I would love to hear from some of you so please feel free to shoot me an email at [email protected] .
