Douglas Canty

Wow. This site is almost as good as Facebook for finding lost friends from Baldwinsville. I'll try and make a long story short. After graduation I had about 10 days before I reported to Basic Training in Orlando, FL for the US Navy. I served for only 2 years before coming back to NY for college and ROTC at Renssealaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. I got married to Jodi Lynn Doback (would have been C.W. Baker class of '92) who graduated HS in Troy, NY the year I started college 91-92. Our first son Alex was born there in Troy in 1993. I left school for many reasons in the Spring of 1994, the most pressing of which was burnout. I had been in school non-stop since Kindergarten (my Navy time was all in training). LMAO.

So from 1994 to 2004 we all lived a quiet life and somewhat peaceful existence in Central New York after moving "almost" back home. Cicero, North Syracuse, Liverpool and ultimately bought our first home in the village of Camillus in 2000. I joined the US Army Reserves in 1997 because I missed military life very much. I later became a Drill Sergeant in 1999... Yeah me... quiet go with the flow Doug became a Drill Isntructor shaping our future Soldiers.

My youngest son, Connor Ryan was born in 1997 while we lived in North Syracuse. Somewhere in between all of that Jodi fit in graduating from Nursing school, and the boys excelled at school and sports. 9-11 happened and I knew it was only a matter of time before I would deploy. In the Spring of 2004 I received my "marching" orders and was called to active duty. I deployed to Iraq with a Reserve Transportation Unit from Indiana. I figured...what the Hell...If anybody knows how to drive trucks it will be some farmers from Indiana. LMAO. It was an experience to say the least.

When I returned from my deployment in 2005 I stayed on Active Duty and received a permanent change of station to a Technical Rescue Engineer company here at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. My marriage to Jodi had been failing for some time and we separated in 2006, and divorced legally in 2007 after 14 years.

I am currently working for my Aviation Battalion as an Additional Duty Safety NCO. I basically look for hazards, teach safety classes and follow up with repports and recommendations for my Commander. Not a bad gig if you can get it. It gives me the time to take care of my career after spending 3 very hard years at my last job. I am very close to finally getting my B.S. in Technology (Nuclear). My next job hasn't been determined yet, but I am hoping to get my Commission as an Officer through OCS. It will only be 15 years late since I should have been commissioned in 1995, but who is counting? For all the twists and turns life throws at us... here we are.
