Today's Featured Biography
Michele Karkut Mills
My personal biography is pretty boring! I graduated from Maria Regina College, Syracuse, NY (now defunct) in May of 1970 with an AAS in Early Childhood Education. I never continued with my original plans to become a teacher, but have had absolutely terrific jobs since July of 1970! I began with Mutual Of New York Life Insurance Company (MONY) as a secretary (thanks to taking both college entrance and business courses in high school, I always landed a position with my business skills). When I left MONY after 18 years, I had responsibilities for 298 employee records, supervised a staff of 12 administrative support employees, developed, monitored and controlled a $25 million budget and facility/space planning for 5 of the MONY tower floors! No two days were the same! I then worked for the American Red Cross for 10 years and would still be there, except "they left me" when they moved their headquarters from Syracuse to W. Henrietta (west of Rochester). My position there was Manager of Employee Relations. Again, no two days alike! Unfortunately, at the ripe old age of 50, finding another lucrative position was impossible, so I began at the bottom of the totem pole as receptionist for a physical therapy clinic in Cicero. After two years, I became the Office Manager where I am still employed. Again, no two days alike!
On the "family" side, Jake and I married in November of 1970 and welcomed our son (Matthew Karkut Mills) in 1982. We continue to reside in the original home we bought in 1975. Jake has been a self employed carpenter since 1979. His skills are exemplary and there is nothing he can't do! From custom cabinets to building homes he, too, has no two days alike! Matthew bought the home I was raised in on Mott Road nine years ago. He worked at Time Warner (6 years) and Verizon (10 years) and for the last two years has worked with Jake.
