Today's Featured Biography
Colleen Thomas Hudgens
I’ve been involved in education for much of that time, starting with getting an undergraduate degree in history and a master’s in teaching (of young children) at the University of Chicago. That’s where I met Steve Hudgens, who graduated from Senior High in 1963 and transferred to Chicago after spending a year in Bozeman. This year we are celebrating our 47th anniversary.
After living in Chicago for 10 years, we spent the next three years in Boston where I worked at MIT and Harvard while Steve was a post-doc at MIT. I also worked in a special high school program of the Boston Public Schools with high school students who had been tracked into non-college-bound programs and later decided that they wanted to attend college. Working with those kids in the Another Course to College Program was one of the biggest delights of my life, but getting used to Boston accents was one of the biggest challenges!
Then we moved to Rochester, New York, where for the three years I did substitute teaching in the public schools and later worked in the computer engineering department at the University of Rochester while my husband worked as a physicist for Kodak.
The next 20 years was the longest stretch of time we lived in one place, namely Detroit. The city was in much better shape than it is now, but even then one could see the damage that had been done to it when the automobile industry deserted the city for the suburbs. Both my husband and I worked for a publicly-held tech company where he directed research and I handled internal and external communications. During this period, I also worked as a public relations account supervisor for a PR firm in Detroit and the communication director for Michigan’s largest public employee union (the Michigan Education Association).
In 2000, we did something that in retrospect we probably should have done much earlier. We moved to northern California to work in Silicon Valley with a high-tech startup. In 2003, I began working at Santa Clara University where I am the assistant to the chief academic officer. My husband teaches courses in SCU’s School of Engineering, and we hope to continue to work here for at least several more years.
We don’t have any children, but we enjoy spending time with five nieces and one nephew. At least two or three cats at a time have lived with us for these many years. I remain committed to progressive politics and the support of social justice causes, the enjoyment of many types of music, and the hope that this planet will survive all of us.
