Today's Featured Biography
Nick Olcott
I continue my work as a theatre and opera director, but I am retired from the Maryland Opera Studio at the University of Maryland. I have directed productions at Kennedy Center in Washington, Lincoln Center in New York, the Royal Opera House in Versailles, France, and numerous theatre and opera houses around the country. My current project is a production of "The Nance" by Douglas Carter Beane.
I began my career as an actor and gradually moved into theatre directing. Twenty-four years ago I was asked to teach in the opera program at U of M, and opera gradually took over my career. It turned out to be the perfect meshing of my love of music (hooray for the Billings public schools' music programs!), drama (hooray for the Thespian Society), and languages (hooray for the schools once again).
I have kept close contact with my AFS family in Belgium since my year there, and just spent my birthday with them to celebrate the 50th anniversary of my time there. I spent last Christmas with Anne-Mette Hansen, who was the AFSer from Denmark at BHS while we were there. I need to thank AFS and the BHS chapter for adding such a wealth of people to my live.
The best part of my life is my husband Tim. We have been together for 44 years. We finally were able to marry in 2010, thanks to the voters of the State of Maryland and the Supreme Court of the United States.
