Today's Featured Biography
David Butler
What have I been doing these last ten years?
Well, riding my bike . . . a lot.
Which led to a heart attack in 2008 (!), but was followed by rides across Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, and many, many other beautiful places around the American West. In fact, among my favorite adventures of the last ten years have been bike rides I did with Yvonne Peters Leipheimer and Terry Mattison, including a beautiful one-day, 100-mile ride around central Montana and a ride up the Beartooth Highway to Beartooth Pass.
Indeed, one of the great things about the last decade has been getting to know some of the classmates I didn't know well fifty years ago - people like Yvonne, who has become a great friend, along with Kathy Pollard, Kim Nybo (Gambish), and all the old Broadwater classmates who I had coffee with whenever I travelled up to Billings to visit my aging (read dying) father these last few years - especially Jeanne Hieb (Haupt). Those trips weren't always fun or easy, but getting together with my old friends made them way more than worthwhile. It made them a great pleasure. I love you guys.
What else?
I spent a couple of months in Ghana, working in a small, rural hospital.
I became pretty good at throwing pots (making them, not destroying them).
And, like so many of you, I enjoyed and lived vicariously through my two wonderful, remarkable daughters. Don't ask me about them at the reunion; you won't be able to stop me.
(But here's one quick story: My younger daughter, Elise, went to college in New York City and her time there overlapped with Elbio Rosselli's tenure as the Uruguayan ambassador to the UN, so I had the great fortune of being able to visit both Elise and Elbio in Manhattan, where we had a wonderful time together.)
So, I have a stent in my heart, a cobalt-steel ball in my hip, but I still ride that bike a bunch.
More than that, though, I have *great* friends and a wonderful family.
I'm blessed.
Can't wait to see you all.
David
