Today's Featured Biography
Kaye Kellogg
Undoubtedly you will recall that I did not graduate with our class. I married during sophomore year and had 3 delightful children before I was 19. My children are now almost as old as I am, and they've held up great! The boys have a little less hair and all three have a smattering of gray! Michelle will be 52 in October, Pat will be 51 in September and Brian will hit the big 50 in January! They have given me much joy and fun throughout the years and have also given me their greatest treasures, my grandchildren! Of my five granddaughters, two are 32, the others are 27, 19 and 18. My four grandsons are 28, 22, 19 and 16. Currently, they have given me four great-grandchildren between 5 and 16.
In the fall of 1962, I (along with at least a dozen other young mothers) returned to the Lower Division of MJC to complete high school. Class of 61 classmates were sophomores that year, so none of us looked or felt too old to be returning to high school. Dean Roy Buntin was our "hero" in the truest sense. His decision, not only to allow us to return to school, but to actively and warmly, welcome, support and encourage us and to treat us with the same respect he gave every student, staff and faculty made us feel that we belonged. We got to have our junior and senior years, and many of us, who would not have been able without this opportunity, got our High School diploma. I was unable to attend school full-time both years, so, lacking 2 credits, did not graduate, but earned my GED in 1968.
At our 25th class reunion in 1986, one of our classmates, Donald Lee Jennings, asked me why I had never completed college. (After years of evening and day classes, I had earned an Associates degree at MJC at 1975, but raising children as a single mother, I felt unable to go any farther at that time). I told him I had never been able to afford it. He shared with me how getting his own college degree had increased the quality of life for his and Mary Kay's family tremendously. Then he told me that in 5 years I'd be five years older whether or not I graduated from college, but those 5 years could well determine the quality of my life for the rest of my life.
When I got home that night all I could think about was what Don had said to me about finishing college. The week after that conversation, I visited both Truman at Kirksville and MU at Columbia, and decided on MU. I spent the next year preparing, and in the fall of ’87 began began my education at MU. I earned a BSW in ’89, and an MSW in ‘91. I worked for 18 years in Social Work, retiring from full time work in 2009. Don Lee was right, of course. My bachelors and masters degrees prepared me for employment that improved the quality of my life significantly. I have enjoyed my work and the many wonderful people I have been privileged to meet in my practice, both colleagues and clients. Since my retirement, I continue to work in my field a couple of days a week, doing work I love and helping people deal with life in more positive and rewarding ways.
So, my friend, if you ever wonder whether you are important in the grand scheme of life, think about what you just read. One conversation with an old classmate at our 25th reunion following graduation changed not only the course of my life, but who knows what ripples through countless lives for the rest of time have and will continue to occur as a result of that one conversation.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
