Today's Featured Biography
Anne Kauffman
After high school, I went on to KU and finally came out of my shell with the help of life in McCollum Hall for two years and a semester abroad in Paris, France, and Florence, Italy. All four years I sang in many choirs. I graduated with a BA in Mathematics in May 2002.
Not sold on getting a career at that point in time, I backpacked around Western Europe for three months, two of those months with a friend of mine from the dorms. I had a great time! Although, without a job, I had to come home and earn some money. Over the next few years, I worked as a bank teller, banquet server at the Sheraton Suites, paraprofessional at Nieman Elementary, and summer seasonal staff member at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico teaching Boy Scouts how to blacksmith and pan for gold.
September 2004 through July 2005, I was working in Krakow, Poland, as an English teacher in a private school in the center of the city. One of the best decisions of my life! The other expats working at the school were all sociable characters, and the organization who sent me, AIESEC, provided me with an instant group of 25 international friends all working in Krakow, like me. While there, I joined a Polish rock band with an American lead singer who worked at the school with me. As well, I joined a Polish university choir and performed several times with them; I helped them on their pronunciation in English tunes such as "White Christmas."
The economy didn't allow for me to save much money while there, so, again, I returned to the U.S. and began working as a teller once more.
Summer 2006 was spent with the Boy Scouts in New Mexico again, this time teaching them fly fishing. I landed one of the coveted jobs to stay during the fall and winter and act as a hiking guide at the ranch. Winter camping is amazing! The following summer, I remained still and landed a position in Logistics, keeping track of the thousands of hikers in the mountains. This fall again I stayed and repaired tents, inventoried fire trucks, tested fire hydrants, and learned how to skin an elk.
Today, I sit in Kansas City, contemplating studying for the second actuarial exam as I might make that career move rather soon. For the month of December, I was fortunate to earn some money singing for holiday concerts. I hope that I can continue singing in the months to come.
