Anna Marie Kukec Tomczyk
Anna Marie Kukec is a Chicago-based journalist. Her byline has appeared in U.S. News & World Report, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, ABA Journal, BusinessWeek Chicago, Argonne Today and other print and online publications.
After her days on the Mustang Monitor, she worked at the Daily Southtown as a reporter, columnist and section editor. She earned various awards from the Suburban Press Club of Chicago for her Spotlight on Youth column and for a news story about a Moraine Valley Community College professor charged with espionage in the former Yugoslavia. She also received the Woman of the Year honor from Evergreen Park High School and a Certificate of Appreciation from the Youth Services Department of the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.
She then became a speechwriter and spokeswoman for the Illinois Attorney General's Office, working with both Democrats and Republicans. She then became a staff reporter for the American Bar Association.
For about 17 years, Kukec was an award-winning senior writer at the Daily Herald and its Business Ledger Magazine. She won various awards, including a Chicago Headline Club Lisagor Award as part of the reporting team on minimum wage stories. She also was the lead writer and coordinator of the four-part series, "The Dream Foreclosed," about residential foreclosures that earned first place in public service from the Illinois Associated Press Editors Association, the Chicago Journalists Association's Sarah Brown Boyden Award, first place from the National Federation of Press Women, first place in the Illinois Woman's Press Association, and meritorious achievement from the Chicago Bar Association’s Herman Kogan Awards. The series also was nominated for a Chicago Headline Club Lisagor Award. In addition, she earned a first-place award in business reporting from the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association for a story about the sale of a small company called Scale-Tronix. She also did occasional guest spots on ABC7-TV, WBBM Radio and WGN Radio in Chicago.
She decided to leave the Daily Herald in 2017 to start her own writing business, which has included Argonne National Laboratory, the ABA Journal, U.S. News & World Report and others.
She is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists and former vice president, secretary and member of the Chicago Headline Club Board of Directors.
A Chicago resident, she is a graduate of St. Xavier University and is married to James P. Tomczyk.
