Ken Keller is Professor Emeritus of the Department of Radio-Television at Southern Illinois University Carbondale from which he retired in 2000. Keller served 16 years as Head of the Broadcast News Sequence and Assistant Department Chair. After leaving SIU, Keller spent two years as interim News Director and Reporter at WJBC Radio, Bloomington, and another two years as Visiting Lecturer in Journalism at the University of Illinois where he taught the capstone television news course in the Broadcast Journalism sequence. He also spent a semester at Illinois State University where he taught Introduction to Mass Communication and Media Writing.
Prior to entering academia, Keller spent more that 20 years as a reporter, producer, assignment editor, executive producer and news director in Champaign, IL, San Antonio, TX, St. Louis, MO, Kansas City, MO, Los Angeles, CA, and the Quad Cities of Illinois and Iowa. He is a past President and Executive Secretary of the Illinois News Broadcasters Association and currently coordinates the Multicultural Internship Program for the Illinois Broadcasters Association. Keller spent much of 2007 as a consultant and start-up news director for North Shore Radio, LLC (WGSO-AM, New Orleans), a company which purchased and moved the radio station to Slidell, LA to serve as a “hyper-local” outlet for residents of the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain.
Keller is a graduate of the University of Illinois, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism and Communications in 1964 and a Master of Television degree in 1966. While attending the U. of I., Keller served as staff announcer and Program Director of WPGU, the student-operated radio station. He also served as reporter and anchor for WILL-AM/FM/TV. He served in the U.S. Air Force.
