Today's Featured Biography
Jack Daugherty
After High School, I attended Iowa State, (BSEE, 1957) where I met Phyllis and the starting in 1961 I studied at Purdue (MS 1963, PhD 1965). From 1957 to 1961 was in the US Navy, working for Admiral Rickover, first on the reactor for the Carrier Enterprise, then for the Cruiser Long Beach and fianlly for last two years the ballastic Missile submarines. After Purdue I was employed at Avco Everett Research Laboratory (AERL) where I first participated in research on several plasma physics devices. In the late '60's, I invented a method for making very high power (military weapons class) lasers and then designed and built several very high power devices during the 1970's. I served as AERL Vice President-Laser Research and Development from 1972-1984, Vice President-Research & Develpment, Avco Systems Group (1984-'87), and then General Manager AERL until the laboratory was closed down in 1990 with the "closing" of the threat of the "Evil Empire" (Soviet Union). In 1990 I retired from Textron (by then Avco Corporation had been purchased by Textron) and started a second carrier with Thermal Electron. In August 2005 I retired and now as a retiree, from time to time Consult on lasers and other technical issues. In addition to time spent with our Daughters, Sons-in-Law and seven GRAND children, Phyllis and I particularly enjoy travel and our periodic reunions (Ottumwa, Peoria, Iowa State) with our long time, old friends.

Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
