Today's Featured Biography
Melvin Johnson
After graduating with the great class of '53, I went to work for the Milw. RR. as a telegraph opr./relief agent for a year. I then attended Iowa State for one year before transferring to Northeast Missouri State, now Truman State, in Kirksville, Mo. I received a B.S. Degree in Music Education in 1958, and was promptly drafted into the good old US Army for a two year all expense paid vacation, or so I thought. I was sent to Radio teletype school in Augusta, GA., and assigned to Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. After serving for 18 months I received an early release discharge to teach school in Wyaconda, MO. After one year I applied for the Band Director's position at Seymour, IA. where I taught instrumental music to grades 5-12 for 8 years. This is also where I met my lovely wife of 42 years now. She was one of my students the first year at Seymour. Boy, were we the talk of the town!! We left Seymour in 1968 when I took the Band Director position at Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs, IA. I held this position for 6 years and then became an assistant principal for 4 years at a K-9 building, Bloomer School, there in Council Bluffs. When my principal and mentor Jim Howard left as principal of Bloomer, I took over the position for the next three years. Jim Howard moved to Kearney, NE. as superintendent of schools, and hired me as an elementary principal at Northeast Elementary in Kearney. I fulfilled this position for 18 years and retired in 1999 after 40 years in public education.
We have a 5th wheel trailer and have been doing extensive travelling the last few years, and I get to play a lot of golf, weather premitting, year round. I also direct the choir at the Kearney Evangelical Free Church and sing on the Worship Team for Sunday morning services.
I have continued to be actively involved in music. I sang in the Opera Omaha chorus and sang in and directed the Celebration of Life Choir as well as Broadway Christian Church choir while living in Council Bluffs. And I sang for several years with a group of professional singers, called "The Company." I am also active in the Kearney Community Theatre.

Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
